Description:
Under the direct supervision of the Children’s and Youth Services Coordinator, the Summer Programmer will be a key member of the Children’s Services team who will assist in the design and delivery of summer programs and outreach activities for children and teens. The Summer Programmer will also assist with the promotion, planning and implementation of the TD Summer Reading Club at the library, its branches and at various locations within the community. The student may also assist with other library duties as assigned.
This position would provide an ideal summer employment experience for a student in Library Sciences, either at the Technician level or enrolled in an MLIS program. This position would also provide an excellent opportunity to gain experience working with children for a post-secondary student who is planning a career in Education.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists in the preparation, presentation, and implementation of programs and events for children and teens
- Assists children and teens with the selection of appropriate reading materials
- Registers children for the TD Summer Reading Club and teens for the summer Teen Reads Club
- Records reading activities that are reported by TD Summer Reading Club participants
- Keeps relevant TD Summer Reading Club statistics
- Encourages family literacy through the creation of displays
- Assists with outreach programs in the community to promote and publicize summer reading and other library services
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age and fulfill all requirements as outlined by the Canada Summer Jobs Program.
- Was registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year (2016/2017)
- Intends to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year (2017/2018)
- Is a student in a post-secondary, vocational or technical program
- Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (foreign students are not eligible)
- Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
- Has access to a reliable mode of transportation
- A valid Police Vulnerable Sector Clearance Check is required for successful candidates 18 years and older and must be received on or prior to the start date. The police check is obtained at the employee’s expense
The ideal candidate for this position will also possess the following skills and characteristics:
- Experienced in and comfortable with working with large groups of children
- A passion for creating and facilitating innovative programs for children and teens
- Outstanding organizational and problem solving skills
- Strong public speaking and presentation skills
- Experienced in creating promotional displays
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment
- Knowledgeable and passionate about children’s and teen literature
- Proficient in using Microsoft Office and Google Drive products
- Experienced in collecting and analyzing statistics
- Strong communication and writing skills
- Bilingual proficiency is an asset
- Currently pursuing a post-secondary education in library science, early childhood education, teaching, or a related field
Work Environment
The work environment is mainly indoors, in a comfortable library setting, and involves everyday risks which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting rooms and libraries. Hazards are considered minor and controllable. Noise level is usually moderate. Work is performed amid normal conditions of dust, odours, fumes and noises. Outdoor work may be required when providing outreach in the community.
Physical Stresses
Work involves prolonged sitting or standing, as well as light physical effort including lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, pulling and pushing activities, manual dexterity, and repetitive movements. Moving, shelving and retrieving library materials from high or low settings may be involved. Clear speech as well as visual and hearing acuity must be used on a daily basis. Continuous viewing of a computer screen with attention to detail or small print occurs daily for short periods of time.
