Debriefing – Exercise Deployment

Safety:
What safety issues were not identified or could be managed more effectively?
None, due to experience all safety issues were covered.
Equipment Deployment:
How could we have improved the equipment deployment portion of the exercise?
We accomplished what needed to be done in a timely manner.
Equipment Deficiencies:
What equipment deficiencies did you see?
Watergate was did not perform as well as expected.
Communications:
How can we improve communications? (ie: was the sound acceptable? were directions clear?)
Sound and communications were done very well.
Training Effectiveness / Exercise Improvement:
How can we make these exercises more effective?
We split the group up into 3 sections and that pleased all that attended. Everyone participated.
Lessons Learned:
What were the lessons learned?
You have to think on your feet incase equipment does not work for the situation you are in.
Other Types of Training:
What other types of co-op exercises would you like to see?
More hands on experience.
Other Equipment Needed in this Area:
What additional equipment would be beneficial to this co-op area?

Debriefing – Classroom Exercise

Training Usefulness:
Was the training of use to you? (show of hands – approximate percentage)
95%, those that were able to participate learned far more than the educational portion (dryland) part of the exercise.
Course Material:
What else could be included in this course to improve the effectiveness (ie: topics, training material, sequence of information, more case studies, etc)?
A case study where participants would have to find solutions would be beneficial.
Instructor:
How can a WCSS instructor be more effective in delivering this course?
The instructor was great
Training Application:
What information did you learn today that will apply to your daily job?
Safety of self comes first, do what you can with what you have until help arrives be it straw bales, boom, or what is in the WCSS response unit.
General Comments:
What other comments do you have that can help us to improve this course (ie: timing, location, etc)?
Location was logical due to a company having a pipeline & facility upstream. This location would be the first step of many sites for recovery.

Spill Medium:

Was Spill Medium was used for the exercise? / Yes / No / X

Control Point Evaluation:

Recommendations: / Excellent first stop control point
Recommendations - WCSS Equipment:
Equipment Used:
Training Trailer
Watergate Dam / Training trailer used however a regional trailer and more equipment would be advised for this site. A Watergate dam might work but boom would be a safer bet due to the river flow. Several other control points would need to be established because this river feeds into the Peace River and contaminates could flow into Alberta very fast due to the speed of the river flow (13km on a slow day).
Equipment Deficiencies / Follow-Up (Identify Responsibilities)
Watergate did not work as expected, boom was efficient and Turnervalley gates worked well.
Debriefing Suggestions: / If this site was to be used it may be too close to the “event” further downstream may work better but access may be an issue and then there is the threat of entering the Peace River that on a slow day runs at 13km a call to BC Hydro must be done ASAP.
