This lesson is an introduction to the world in spatial terms.

Time (is this a 1 day 50 minute lesson, 5 day 1 hour lesson, once a week over a month lesson….):

This is a one day 40-minute lesson.

What do the students already know? (This could be the Intro or they have learned information before starting this lesson):

The students will have a short introduction about continents in general. This introduction will act as a warm up to activate background knowledge. Students should know: a continent is a large area of the Earth, each continent has its own unique qualities, and continents can consist of several countries, regions, and islands. Finally, they should know that the 7 continents are: Antarctica, North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia (Oceania).

Objective (What are the students’ going to accomplish):

Students will learn the following about each continent: where it is located, population, the animals that live there, languages spoken, major countries, and a little about its basic landforms.

Materials:

  • A printout of the map for each student
  • Pencils
  • Smartboard
  • Markers or crayons

Procedure:

1. Generate background knowledge with a brief introduction

2. Read and discuss the information and pictures on the Power Point

3. Perform a quick formative assessment to the class as a whole using the questions of the Power Point

4. Pass out a map for students to fill in and identify each continent

Assessment (How will the students’ show you that the objective has been met):

The assessment will be formative as I will have seven questions on the board. I will ask the question to the class as a whole and let them answer together. Next, I will pass out a map of the world and have the students identify each continent. They can color code it if they like.

A Brief Description Of The Entire Lesson - Plus Any Additional Information to be Included:

To begin the lesson, I will generate background knowledge with a brief introduction. Next, I will read the information on the Power Point and discuss by going in to depth on each slide. We will discuss the information and the pictures provided. After the students have learned the information, I will perform a quick formative assessment to the class as a whole using the seven questions of the board. I will ask the question to the class and let the students answer together. Then, I will pass out a map of the world to have students fill in and identify each continent. They can color code it if they wish.
