®  The Capitol

The Columbia Room: The Washington Coalition for Gifted Education has use of the Columbia Room on the first floor of the Capitol building from 8:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This will be our main gathering spot as a group. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and hot cider will be available beginning about 8:30, as well as cookies--all provided by the Coalition.

¬  Adults, please sign in with the Coalition in the Columbia Room. They are the coordinators of this annual event and they need to know about those who attend in order to continue to improve this event each year.

1.  The Washington Coalition for Gifted Education is a non-profit organization, to which Challenge Parents Association pays an annual membership, and there would be no Gifted Education Day without the Coalition’s efforts. Donations from families directly to the Coalition are always helpful and much appreciated. If you wish to make a donation to the Coalition while at the Capitol, please bring your cash or check in a plain white envelope and hand it to one of the Coalition staff in the Columbia Room. Capitol fundraising rules prevent direct solicitation of donations while at the Capitol, and allow only for donations given in plain white envelopes.

¬  Sign-in and pick up your name tag in the Columbia Room from a CPA board member. Your tag will indicate your group color. We’ll phone in the pizza count by 10:00 a.m.

¬  We can leave personal belongings in the Columbia Room. The room will be inhabited throughout the day, but neither the Coalition nor CPA makes any guarantees about the security of personal belongings left there. Please be sure to keep all valuables, electronics, and keys with you while visiting the Capitol.

  The Tours

¬  We request that adults plan to stay in the Columbia room to hear the guest speakers scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

1.  If you arrive after 9:30, please come to the Columbia room events instead.

2.  If your child(ren) has/have already toured the Capitol and the tour group is too large, please plan to join us in the Columbia room instead.

¬  Our scheduled tours are with Stephanie and Patrick of the Secretary of State’s office. Stephanie will take the younger students (first through third graders), and Patrick will take the older students (fourth through sixth graders). Some parents may be asked to join the groups to help chaperon.

¬  Both tours will begin at 9:30 a.m. Stephanie and Patrick will meet our students in the Columbia Room.

¬  Both tours will end with a meeting with Secretary of State Sam Reed at 11:00 a.m.

¬  Both tours will re-join our group in the Columbia Room for lunch after the tours.

  The Legislator Meetings

¬  We have meetings scheduled with seven out of the 12 legislators who represent our school district. Your name tag color will indicate which meetings we would like you to attend. Tag colors are noted on the itinerary on the first page of this packet.

¬  Each of the 12 legislators will receive a bound copy of the letters composed by our students.

«  We will deliver the letter packets to the offices of the legislators with whom we are not meeting during the late afternoon.

«  We will present the letter packets to each legislator at our meetings with them.

«  We will have copies available of the letters written by students who are in attendance. Students will have the opportunity to read their letters aloud during the meetings with legislators. No one will be required to read, but we got some wonderful letters and are hopeful that students are willing to read their letters aloud.

«  The key things we want to convey during these meetings are:

ª  Making them aware of how important gifted education continues to be in our lives.

ª  Thanking them for their support of gifted education in Washington State.

®  Group photo

Please make every effort to gather on the north steps of the Legislative Building for a group photo after our last legislator meeting at 1:30. This is both a great memento and evidence of how much our school district representation grows each year.

®  The Optional Activities

  Committee Meetings:

¬  Both the House and the Senate will be holding committee meetings starting at 1:30. Portions of these meetings are open to the public (some may go into closed executive session). The contents of these meetings may not be appropriate or accessible for all students, so please use your discretion in selecting which, if any, committee meetings to observe.

  Self-Guided Tours:

®  Other important information:

Bags/Backpacks/Electronics/Hats: Students are not allowed to carry backpacks or to have any electronic devices with them. Adults may carry bags or backpacks and have electronic devices. So adults should plan to carry their child’s lunches and necessities for the day. No hats or caps are allowed.

Lunch: There is a cafeteria in the Capitol Building, but it is quite crowded during lunch hours. We found it works well to bring a sack lunch and eat in the Columbia Room together picnic style.

Snacks: This will be a long day, we encourage you to have snacks on hand for each family member. Lunch will be early, so an afternoon snack would be a great idea.
