Think about the cylinder. If it contains 2 balls- how much physical space is left or remaining? Look at diagram. You should be thinking of an operation named: Subtraction or Finding the Difference.

Kandace is doing her National History Day presentation. She has gathered the following information from the internet.

 The population of Metro Atlanta is estimated to be 5,400,000.  The population of Georgia is 1 x 108.  The population of the United States is 316,000,000.  The population of the World is 7.12 x 109.

Unfortunately, all of the information was not expressed in the same format. Please help her out by completing the following:

7.Write the population of Metro Atlanta in scientific notation. (1 point)

Means 1 digit to left of the decimal.

5,400,000 = 5.4 x 106

8. Write the population of Georgia in standard form. (1 point)

1 x 108 = 100,000,000

9. Write the population of the United States in scientific notation. (1 point)

316,000,000 = 3.16 x 108

10. Write the population of the World in standard form. (1 point)

7.12 x 109= 7,120,000,000

11. About how many times bigger is the population of the World than the population of the United States? Round to two significant digits after the decimal. (3 points) You should divide.

7.12 x 109 divided by 3.16 x 108 =2.253 x 10 9-8 = 2.253 x 10 1 = 22.53 times

Decide whether this headline is true using the following information.

Everyday 7% of Americans Eat at Giantburger

  • There are about 8 × 103

Giantburger restaurants in America.

  • Each restaurant serves about 2.5 × 103 people every day.
  • There are about 3 × 108 Americans.

Explain your reasons and show clearly how you figured it out.

Step One: Convert Scientific Notation to Standard Form

8 × 103 = 8,000 restaurants

2.5 × 103 = 2500 people served by each restaurant

3 × 108 = 300,000,000 number of Americans

Step Two: Calculate Value for 7% of Americans

Multiple or Find 7/100. 300,000,000 x 0.07 = 21,000,000 people

7/100 = x/300,000,000 = 21,000,000 people

Step Three: Calculate How Many Americans Eat Giantburgers Daily

Multiply # restaurants x people eating at restaurant daily =

8,000 x 2,500 =20,000,000 people eat at Giantburger daily

Step Four: Compare the Numbers

21,000,000 peoplerepresents 7% of America

20,000,000 people actually eat at Giantburger daily based on data provided

Step Five: Explain Your Final Analysis

20,000,000 does NOT represent exactly 7% of American population… If using estimates information is close.

20,000,000/300,000,000 = 6.66% of American population.

But the real American population is currently MORE than 300,000,000…so the advertisement is FALSE.

If you are rounding the 6.66 up to the nearest percent, then the statement can be considered TRUE based off of information provided and the population data provided.
