Edmodo Training Handouts
Nina O’Daniels

Library Media Specialist
Fort Zumwalt West High School
1251 Turtle Creek Dr
O’Fallon, MO 63366

The following handouts were created specifically for my building and therefore, some information presented may or may not be applicable to your school or district. When training was conducted, we broke it up into four sessions, approximately 35 minutes each. The handouts provided can be used as a large packet or as part of continuing training. If these will be helpful to your building teachers, please feel free to use them.

Example of how handouts were presented to my faculty:

Session 1: Introduction, logging in to Edmodo, creating a group, joining a group Pages 1-2

Session 2: What is a community/group, navigation page for a “home page” on Edmodo Pages 3-5

Session 3: Posting/attaching files and assignment, student work in Edmodo, posting to library Pages 6-10

Session 4: Open training for those who had specific questions and needed more one on one help

Edmodo is an online social networking site for educators. Students are able to log on to share ideas, files, and complete their assignments with their class.

·  To sign up for Edmodo, simply go to “Edmodo.com” and complete the sign-up form as a teacher. You will need the building’s code to enter the FZW District Group/School Group. That code is “XXXXX.”

CREATE A GROUP

Organize your students by subject, section, or grade level. Teachers and students can join multiple groups and educators can make small groups or sub-groups within a group.

·  Click on Create in the Groups area on the left of your home page.

·  Give the group a name, select the grade level or use the slider to select multiple grade levels, and choose a subject.

·  Click create and you will be given the group code for others to use and join the group.

STUDENTS JOINING YOUR GROUP

Students signing into Edmodo the first time will need to click on “I’m a Student” to create an account. They can add codes at this point, if available. Having students use their lunch pins for a password is suggested. If student is already in Edmodo, teachers will need to provide classes with the group code.

TEACHERS JOINING A GROUP OR COMMUNITY

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY?

·  Participants are part of a community (outside of Zumwalt) that posts questions, lesson plans, links and ideas to persons within that community.

·  Find educators all over the world within the communities and professional organizations with similar ideas and interests.

·  Find the communities icon on the left side of your screen. Click on browse and icons will pop up with the name of the community. There should be a description of the community to read. If you are interested in joining, simply click on the community and follow.

·  Posts will show up on your “latest post” feed from the different communities to which you belong.

·  The administrator of our Edmodo account (JB Mette) is the only one who can create communities. Edmodo and publishers created existing ones on Edmodo.

WHAT IS A GROUP?

·  Useful for classrooms (one group for each class is recommended)

·  For PLC groups, clubs, organizations, departments that need a way of communicating, sharing information and ideas that is in one location.

·  Create a group by clicking on the “create” button on the left side of your screen. You will be asked to enter a name for your group and it will supply you with a group code.

·  To have people join your group, you can simply give them the code or give the URL provided.

·  The code can be locked or changed if needed.

·  CWC teachers can be included as a co-teacher which will allow them most of the same functions as the group creator.

6

WHAT IS A SMALL GROUP?

·  Essentially a group within a group.

·  Ideal for students who are working together on a project. They would be able to post to each other, without clogging up the classroom posts.

·  Lit circles, lab groups, discussion groups, collaborative projects

·  Easily managed by the administrator of the larger group (the teacher and/or co-teacher)

·  Click and drag members into the small group (easy to add and delete)

·  Teacher can post to small groups or as a whole group

·  Only students within the small group can post/see posts within the small group

SUGGESTION:

*****Create an Edmodo folder in your Outlook calendar and create a rule to avoid clutter. You will receive numerous notifications if your classes are using Edmodo; this will eliminate frustration with an inundated inbox. *****

·

ADDING TO THE LIBRARY
