Risk Specialist

This role is vital to the Risk Management and Environmental Health and Safety division of finance. The Specialist will work with the Manager, Risk & EHS to observe and quantify operational activities at Mazda to formulate and propose risk mitigation strategies. This position is responsible to oversee that Mazda is staying on top of best practices, industry trends, and incorporating compliance with new legislation.

Key responsibilities will include: insurance placement, contract review, safety compliance, loss prevention and analysis.

Insurance Programs

  • Collect and/create exposure data, compiling, analyzing and preparing insurance underwriting submissions.
  • Procure and renew appropriate surety certification to comply with MNAO bond requirements.
  • Communicate the company’s insurance philosophy to business units.
  • Produce special ad hoc reports and analysis as necessary.

Environmental Health & Safety

  • Develop and deliver safety training programs and promote best practices that ensure a high level of knowledge throughout the organization to continually improve safety.
  • Coordinate the environmental permitting and compliance activities at all locations (OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory agencies).
  • Evaluate and recommend the most effective external risk management and safety partners and vendors and coordinate their activities to achieve the Company’s risk management, safety, and cost control objectives.
  • Conducts ergonomic reviews, recommend and implement solutions.
  • Participate in annual loss control site visits.
  • Conduct audits of all locations to verify regulatory compliance and that risk is being managed.

  • Ensure Safety Data Sheet compliance.

Contract Management

  • Review contracts for insurance adequacy in standard promotional, sponsorship and vendor agreements.
  • Review and make comments and change recommendations for the insurance provisions in third party contracts to ensure compliance with our risk management best practices.

Claim Submission

  • Process claim submissions for marine claims.
  • Initiate auto deductible letters for auto claims.
  • Review loss runs and prepare monthly analysis.
  • Ensure timely resolution for complex claim matters.
  • Liaise with claims adjusters and outside counsel regarding the disposition of claims/law suits.
  • Assist in the negotiation of insured and self-insured loss settlements not involving litigation.

Desired Skills and ExperienceQualifications and Other Requirements:

Education (Minimum):

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Risk Management, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field or equivalent experience

Experience:

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience, to include3+ years of professional experience in business financial analysis role (required) and 1+ year of work experience in risk management and/or environmental health and safety (highly desired).
  • Auto industry and/or loss control & prevention experience a plus.

Training/Certification:

Certifications in Risk Management (ARM, CRM, CPCU or equivalent), highly desired.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Exposure to legal principals of tort and contract law would also be an asset as well as significant knowledge of various insurance markets.
  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to analyze, summarize and convey complex information and excellent attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated analytical and financial modeling skills with ability to prepare materials and presentations that communicate meaningful data and analysis.
  • Insurance and regulatory knowledge – a good general understanding of insurance and the regulatory environment.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Individual must operate with a high degree of accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Able to consistently demonstrate excellent interpersonal relations and communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Remain current on industry risk, risk trends and risk reduction techniques.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc. SAP skills a plus.
  • Ability to work with a Risk Management Information System.
