AIMSWeb: Literacy Practice

The literacy portion of the first grade AIMSWeb testing in the fall consists of four parts: letter naming fluency, letter sound fluency, phonemic segmentation fluency, and nonsense word fluency. Below are some ideas to practice these at home!

Letter Naming Fluency

·  Use the alphabet flash cards to read letters as quickly as possible!

Letter Sound Fluency

·  Use the alphabet flash cards to say the sounds of each letter as quickly as possible. (The vowels need to be short vowel sounds!)

Phonemic Segmentation Fluency

·  Say a word aloud to the child. Have students “press out” the sounds in that word. Start with words with two or three sounds. Try words with four or more sounds for a challenge!

·  Example-- Adult: “cat.” Child: “/k/ /a/ /t/”

Nonsense Word Fluency

·  Choose a vowel as the middle card and have child pull two consonants from a bag of alphabet flash cards to put on either side of the vowel. Have child read the word! If they cannot read the nonsense word! If the child cannot read the nonsense word easily, they may say the sounds of each letter.

·  Example--

c a t

Child Reads word: “cat” or says the sounds of the letters: “/k/ /a/ /t/.”

a / b / c / d / e / f
g / h / i / j / k / l
m / n / o / p / q / r
s / t / u / v / w / x
y / z

AIMSWeb: Math Practice

The math portion of the first grade AIMSWeb testing in the fall consists of five parts: Oral Counting, Number Recognition, Quantity Discrimination, Missing Number Fluency, and Math Computation. Below are some ideas to practice these at home!

Oral Counting

·  Have your child count as high as possible.

Number Recognition 0-20

·  Have your child cut the number cards apart and use them as flash cards.

·  Put the number cards in order

·  Put the correct number of objects (pennies, cheerios, etc.) next to a number

Quantity Discrimination

·  Turn over two cards and your child names the bigger number

·  You can turn over a card and your child turns over a card. The person with the bigger number says “me!”

Missing Number

·  Have your child closes his/her eyes. Put the number cards in order and take away a card. Your child identifies the missing number.

·  Put down two number cards and your child names the number that comes next in the sequence (5,6, ? or ?, 18, 19)

Math Computation

·  Pick two number cards and have your child find the sum. To find the sum, your child can use manipulatives, draw pictures, write equations, etc.
