Catalog Description: HEHP 238 is an elective course designed to present

information and techniques in the use of therapeutic modalities and exercise. This

information will be used to related theory to practice in order to effectively

rehabilitate the injured athlete. The student will not only participate in the

classroom, but he/she will also gain valuable practical experience.

Course Learning Outcomes/Objectives:

a.  To introduce the student to the general indications and contraindications for various therapeutic modalities and exercise techniques.

b.  To provide the student with information and the practical experience needed to select correct therapeutic modalities and exercise techniques as indicated.

c.  Utilize course materials, professional literature, and relevant research material to justify physiologic response of various care and rehabilitation techniques.

General Education Goals Addressed in the Course:

#3 – To develop the ability to solve problems by collecting, organizing and evaluating information. Students collect, organize and evaluate laboratory data on themselves. For example, blood pressure and body fat composition. Once the information is collected, organized and evaluated the student puts a plan together on how to manage their blood pressure and to possibly lower their body fat percentage.

#9 – To develop global perspective on problems and issues that humankind faces, and to explore solutions which are morally, socially, economically, politically and ecologically sound. Discussions of the morality and ethics of the Health Care System. The fact that good social rapport with your nurse or physician can allow a patient to recover from an illness faster. Ecological or environmental concerns and their effect on our health.

#10 – To develop the understanding of health and well being necessary to

confront the challenges facing individuals, families and communities. All issues of health and well-being are directed to the student in a manner that encourages them to apply the information to themselves, their present and future families as well as the community.

Course Standards: Class assignments with specific dates due will be reduced 10% each week of lateness. Exam dates are listed. Any date you are unable to make that exam should be scheduled to be taken in advance. Emergency make-ups should be taken up with the instructor in a timely fashion. The allowance of make-ups is done on an individual basis. Make-ups are not always allowed. Class participation is strongly encouraged. Tardiness is strongly discouraged. Withdrawal from the course is based on college policy. See your student handbook. All extra credit must be turned in by the end of the day due.

Attendance Policy:

·  10% as specified by college policy i.e., 15 classes =2 absences, 45 classes = 5 absences.

·  30 classes = 3 absences.

·  See your Professor if you receive an absence warning ASAP.

Comments made in the classroom should show respect for fellow students. No swearing or derogatory statements should be part of a college classroom. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. The Professor has the right to ask you to leave. It is up to you to schedule an appointment to discuss the dismissal prior to returning to classroom. Phones or text messaging or any items which might disturb the class should be turned off prior to entering the classroom. No chewing tobacco in class. Excessive lateness and disturbance of the class may require withdrawal.

Withdrawal Policy: Effective Fall Semester, 2008, a new OCC course withdrawal policy took effect. A student may withdraw or be withdrawn from a course with the instructor assigning a grade of "W" and providing last date of attendance, up until a specified date. This date changes every semester. If a student stops attending or is administratively withdrawn after this date, an "F" will be assigned. The Add/Drop/Withdrawal Form can be obtained from the Registration and Records Office on the first floor of the Administration Building. Return the completed and signed form to the Registration and Records Office. This new policy applies to all OCC courses.
