To submit a research proposal to Zoos Victoria
1) Contact Dr Michael Magrath, Senior Scientist, Wildlife Conservation & Science, Zoos Victoria, to discuss your research proposal. Please note that negotiations for research proposals can be lengthy and involve multiple parties. Therefore, it is recommended that you begin this process at least two weeks before the research application is due.
2) Complete the Zoos Victoria research application form.
3) Submit your completed (and fully signed) research application to Michelle Cooper, Support Officer, Wildlife Conservation & Science by the due date. Please note that this date is four weeks before the relevant AEC meeting.
4) Your research application will be sent to the Director of Wildlife Conservation & Science and the Senior Property Managers of the relevant Zoos Victoria property(s) (i.e. Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and/or Healesville Sanctuary).
They will evaluate your proposal against the following:

What happens next depends on the type of research proposal:
(A) If the proposed project has no potential ethical implications
i. After approval by the Director of Wildlife Conservation & Science and the Senior Property Managers, research can commence immediately.
ii. Any theses, published reports etc. must be submitted to the Wildlife Conservation & Science Department.
(B) If the proposed project has potential ethical implications but has been approved by a recognised external institutional Animal Ethics Committee (AEC)
i. Complete the sections of the Zoos Victoria AEC application form that are not addressed in your external institutional AEC application.
ii. Submit your
· External institutional AEC application.
· External institutional AEC approval letter.
· Zoos Victoria AEC application (relevant sections completed).
by the due date to the Support Officer, Wildlife Conservation & Science.
Please note that this date is two weeks before the relevant AEC meeting.
iii. The Zoos Victoria AEC will consider the proposal and contact you with their outcome.
iii. Research can only commence after approval by the Zoos Victoria AEC. Successful applicants must submit any theses, published reports etc to Wildlife Conservation & Science Department.
(C) If the proposed project has potential ethical implications and has not been approved by any other AEC
i. Complete all sections of the Zoos Victoria AEC application form.
ii. Submit your completed Zoos Victoria AEC application form to Michelle Cooper, Support Officer, Wildlife Conservation & Science, by the due date.
Please note that this date is two weeks before the relevant AEC meeting.
iii. The Zoos Victoria AEC will consider the proposal and contact you with their outcome.
iv. Research can only commence after approval by the Zoos Victoria AEC. Successful applicants must submit annual and final reports to the Zoos Victoria AEC.
