Road Maintenance Cost Guide
1. Table I:
Mandatory deposit and user maintained rates for timber haul includes:
A. Recurrent traffic and non-traffic generated maintenance, i.e. blading,
spot subgrade repair, spot surface replacement, brushing, logging out,
culvert–ditch maintenance, slough-slide removal, etc.
B. Operational maintenance, i.e. pavement markings, signs, traffic controls,
etc.
In addition to the above, mandatory deposit for timber haul includes:
D. Chip seals, surface treatments, bridges, etc.
E. Overhead - 29%.

user or by cooperative deposits.
7. Dust abatement allowance - $3500.00 per lane-mile
INSTRUCTIONS
1. District Timber Departments are responsible for furnishing the following information to
Engineering Departments:
a. Sale area map
b. Timber Volume
c. Average Volume per log Truck
d. Costs per Round Trip Minute (RTM)
2. Engineering Departments are responsible for furnishing the following information
to the District Timber Departments:
a. Road maintenance appraisal
b. All appropriate “C” provisions
3. Recurrent Maintenance – Includes those activities which are anticipated to be needed
on a continuing basis on all roads under Forest Service jurisdiction. Recurrent maintenance
may be accomplished by the user or by cooperative deposits.
4. Subtract 29% from unit costs in Tables I, III, IV and V for Purchaser performed maintenance.
5. Road maintenance rates listed are based on average road maintenance requirements, the
Engineer has the latitude to adjust the rates if the situation warrants, such variation must be
justified and documented in the appraisal.
