Member appointed to sportscotland

The Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing and Sport today announced the appointment of Coral Riddell as a Member to sportscotland.

The overall purpose of the board of sportscotland is to encourage everyone in Scotland to discover and develop their own sporting experience, helping to increase participation and improve performances in Scottish sport and physical activity. In doing so it aims to help develop and support a world class sporting system at all levels. The Board also ensures delivery of Scottish Ministers’ objectives, particularly in relation to the national sport strategy ‘Reaching Higher’ and in maximising the opportunities for Scotland’s sportsmen and women in relation to major games, including the Olympics and Paralympics, Commonwealth Games, as well as other major international sporting competitions. This will be achieved through ensuring the efficient, effective and accountable governance of sportscotland and by contributing to the strategic leadership and direction for the organisation as a whole.

Coral Riddell brings Board experience and a passion for sport to her position with sportscotland. A qualified solicitor, Coral is Head of the Professional Practice team at the Law Society of Scotland. She contributes to and is responsible for a team of solicitors providing advice in relation to practice and ethics for the Scottish legal profession and also holds responsibility for several committees. Prior to her current role Coral worked in private practice with Dundas & Wilson, Maclay & Spens and Pinsent Masons, specialising in Construction and Engineering law and dispute resolution. A recent non-executive role as Legal Director of the British Association of Snowsports, and a former role as Company Secretary to a national governing body have provided key governance, strategy and board skills. Currently, Coral sits on the Board of the Scottish Arbitration Centre with a key focus on ensuring delivery of objectives and performance measures. Coral is a mum with a young family already engaged in sports including swimming, golf and gymnastics. She is an advocate of sport as a means of developing confidence and improving health and believes that access to sport should be available to all.Beyond her family Coral’s biggest passion is skiing. She is qualified as a ski instructor and loves it when it snows.

This appointment will be for four years and will run from 17 December 2014 to 16 December 2018.

This appointment is part-time and attracts a remuneration of £158 per day for a time commitment of 16 days per year.

Coral does not hold any other Ministerial appointments.

This appointment is regulated by the Commissioner for Ethical Standards in Public Life in Scotland.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Coral has not undertaken any political activity in the last five years.
