Farmworker Advocate

Status: Temporary Part-Time

Supervisor: Executive DirectorDepartment: NVCH General

The Farmworker Committee has been in existence for nearly 2 decades and originally operated solely through the efforts of community leaders and volunteers. As existing migrant farmworker housing was renovated and funding for new housing acquired through local and state resources, the committee added representatives of governmental agencies and local non-profits. Napa Valley Community Housing employs a Farmworker Advocate in a temporary position to provide continuity and ongoing attention to migrant farmworker housing and issues related to farmworkers in Napa County. The advocateorganizes and administers the work of the Farmworker Committee under the supervision of Napa Valley Community Housing. This person facilitates communication among all the entities involved with migrant farmworker housing including the Farmworker Committee, the Napa County Housing Commission, Napa Valley Community Housing, Napa County Housing Authority, governmental agencies, non-profits, the community and the farmworkers.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide administrative assistance to the Farmworker Committee with responsibility for the agendas and minutes, maintaining records of important documents and communications, and communication among committee members.
  • Advise and aid the Work Connection in marketing its program and in fulfilling specific needs of the participating farmworkers.
  • Help with fundraising efforts for the Work Connection, for the Farmworker Committee Fund, and for the farmworker housing centers.
  • Maintain and update the Farmworker Facilities brochure and the Brief History of Farmworker Housing in Napa County that give the history, purpose and current status of the farmworker camps. Use these materials to broaden and improve public relations.
  • Facilitate and improve communication among all entities interested in migrant farmworker activities.
  • Research issues related to migrant farmworkers including housing, social services, and industry related information.
  • Work with Resident Managers on Homeless Intervention program.

Qualifications:

  • Education and experience demonstrating a commitment to social justice issues
  • Experience in community organizing and leadership
  • Administrative, writing, and communication skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with a wide variety of people
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to speak Spanish and Englishpreferred
  • Vehicle required with possession of a valid California Driver’s License, a good driving record, and automobile insurance per requirements of the State of California
  • Work independently from own office.
