Lesson Plans

Standards: All subjects taught within the Content Mastery class correlate directly to students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and target their annual IEP goals. Below is a more specific break-down of how those goals are measured and which programs are being used. Progress reports are created quarterly to show progress monitoring for each student.

6th Grade (Reading) / 7th & 8th Grades (Math)
  • Students work on a program called Read 180
  • This program consists of whole group instruction, small group instruction and a software component.
  • Whole Group Instruction:
Students have a workbook that consists of 9 different workshops.
Each workshop targets one or more specific skills (ex: workshop 1 focused on finding main idea of a given passage and reading for details)
Students read 3 different passages within the workshops and answer questions pertaining to the target skill for that workshop.
This is done all together as a class and is teacher lead. Students may answer some questions independently throughout the lesson, but the answers are reviewed as a class afterwards.
Whole group instruction is usually 2 times a week.
  • Small Group Instruction:
Small groups are created based on performance during whole group instruction as well as scores from the software component.
Small groups are pulled as needed to re-teach skills that students continue to struggle with.
Small group instruction only lasts 15-20 minutes and then students work on the software.
  • Software Component:
Students generally spend at least 20 minutes on the software at least 3 days out of the week.
They usually spend at least 1 day a week on the software the whole class (45 minutes).
Usually on days we do whole group instruction, students get 15-20 minutes on the software after whole group instruction.
Within the software component, students have 5 different “zones” they work on: Reading Zone, Spelling Zone, Word Zone, Success Zone, and Writing Zone.
The zones measure reading comprehension, word fluency and decoding, spelling and writing.
  • Students IEP goals are assessed based on the Read 180 program. Goals are measured through the whole group instruction and software. Reports are generated that show percentages of mastery for each specific skill being assessed. These skills align with students’ IEP goals.

  • Students work on a computer-based program called ALEKS.
  • When students first log on to ALEKS they are given a “pretest” to see how many topics/skills they already know based on the grade-level they are assigned on the program. Students are assigned to their current grade level.
  • After the initial assessment, students are shown a pie-chart which is divided into the 7 sections based on state standards within the math curriculum (Whole Numbers, Algebra, Geometry, Fractions, Decimals, Measurements, and Percents/Probability). Students are able to see how many skills they have mastered according to the pie-chart within each section.
  • Students are then able to choose skills to “practice”. Once students have shown enough practice to “master” that specific skill it is added to their pie-chart on their home screen.
  • Students are only assigned skills that the program believes they are ready to learn. Therefore, not all students have the same skills available to practice. It is based on their initial assessment and then on skills they master afterwards.
  • IEP goals are measured through ALEKS assessments. I assign students quizzes that target their IEP goals.
  • As students work on ALEKS, I pull individual students to work on math they are currently working on in their general math class. This is done as needed for the students that need additional support with math.
