Sound and SensePoetic Device Lessons

Summative Assessment

Purpose: To begin our study of poetry with an overview of your chapter from Perrine’s Sound and Sense: An Introduction to Poetry

  1. Check out a book and EVERY ONE is required to read Chapter 2 and take notes on key ideas about reading poetry.
  2. Choose a partner or two, depends on which chapters you have.
  3. You will be assigned a chapter from the book
  4. Read the chapter and record key points you will share with the class. Pay special attention to the boldfaced vocabulary in your chapter. You will need to include this on your visual and handouts.
  5. Choose ONE poem to closely study and annotate. You must get it approved by your teacher! Do this right away.

Presentation and Visual Requirements: We will model for you each part of this assignment. We will also offer feedback about your ideas along the way. It is imperative that you be here every day!

  • Your group will be responsible for becoming an “expert” on your assigned chapter. You will create a presentation that is at least 15 minutes long, but no longer than 25 minutesabout key ideas in your chapter and share an annotated version of your poem explaining your thoughts and ideas to the class. You will make your thinking visible to the class and then we will offer feedback for the annotation. Presentations will begin Oct. 11 approx. A schedule will be given to you soon.
  • You will create a power point that contains the following:

Chapter title

Summary of key ideas from chapter (bullet points that get to the heart of the chapter)

Key vocabulary with definitions and perhaps examples for terms you feel are most important

Power points should include key ideas and slides should not be text heavy. An 18 point font should be used. Use your notes to supplement your presentation.

  • Annotated poem will be on a Word Document with comments inserted. You will annotate the poem for all sorts of interesting things, but you will pay special attention to the concept you are “teaching” to the class. You will go over your annotation in front of the class explaining how and why you made the analysis you did.
  • EACH group member will write a short analytical paragraph about the group’s annotated poem. More information to follow.
  • You will create a handout for the class that will supplement your presentation. It should be one-sided and ONE page long; however, we can make a double-sided copy if you meet the deadline.

Please include the following on your handout:

  • Chapter number and title
  • Key points explained a little further
  • ALL BOLDFACED words in your chapter with definitions
  • A copy of the poem (not annotated)
  • All groups must email their handout to their teacher by Oct. 10 by 3:00 so we can make copies. If we do not get it on this date and time, your group will be responsible for making copies for class. or In the subject line please put your name, chapter number and hour.

You will get 3 labs days, but we suggest you work as much as possible with your group members. We will be giving you feedback along the way so ensure this is a great presentation.
