NO STUDENT IS TO BE DROPPED OFF AT TAPP BEFORE 8:00 A.M. UNLESS THEY ARE ENROLLED IN MORNING STUDY HALL OR INTRAMURALS.

Morning Study Hall

  • Students may not arrive for morning study hall until 8:00 a.m.
  • Parents should drop students off at the front entrance of the school for study hall.
  • All students must report to study hall between 8:00 and 8:50 unless they have a pass from a teacher.
  • Morning study hall is a time for silent reading or silent study.
  • Students are not to be on school property before 8:00 a.m. unless prior arrangements were made with a specific teacher for a specific event.

Intramurals

  • Students participating in intramurals may arrive between 8:00 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. on the scheduled days for intramurals. Students should report to the cafeteria and wait to be escorted to the gym by the teachers.
  • Other than for specific situations listed above, Tapp Middle School does not provide for student supervision before 8:00 a.m. and can assume no liability should a student be at school prior to 8:00 a.m.

BREAKFAST

We want your child to do his/her very best in school.The morning meal breaks the night’s “fast” and provides nutrients and fuel to energize your student for the day. Some children are not hungry when they get up, and some children do not prepare breakfast for themselves when their parents have already left for work.School breakfast provides just what they need with delicious choices of cereal, fruit, milk, and hot entrees. Our cafeteria serves breakfast from 8:50 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. You can prepay for breakfast as you do for lunch. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch will also qualify for free or reduced breakfast.

CONDUCT RATING

Satisfactory (S):

Conduct that generally follows classroom and school rules and does not interfere with the learning of others.

Needs improvement (NI):

Conduct, which frequently causes class disruptions and does not always conform to classroom and school rules.

Unsatisfactory (U):

Conduct which consistently causes class disruptions that interfere with the learning of others and which often does not conform to classroom and school rules.

CONFERENCES

A countywide conference week is held in October. Parents are welcome to meet with teachers, counselors, and administrators. If a parent would like additional conferences with his/her child’s teachers, please call the Counseling Office at 770-222-3761 to schedule a parent/teacher conference.

DRESS CODE

Students are expected to adhere to the Dress Code Policy of the Cobb County Board of Education (JCDB). An appropriate standard of dress enhances the overall climate and expectation of the school.

Dress code checks will take place during homeroom and throughout the day. If a student violates the dress code, he/she will not be allowed to attend class until appropriate clothing is secured. Parents will be contacted to bring a change of clothing to the school. If the student cannot change, he/she will be placed in ISS for the remainder of the day. Repeated dress code violations constitute insubordination and will result in further administrative disciplinary consequences.

The school administrators and teachers shall enforce the dress code policy. The Principal or his/her designee is the final judge as to the appropriateness, neatness and cleanliness of the wearing apparel, and whether or not apparel is disruptive, distracting, or in violation of the dress code.

Casual Fridays: Students may wear solid blue or black jeans (no other colors,holes, patches, rips) with a Tapp or McEachern spirit shirt or a uniform shirt.No leggings or jeggings. Any closed toe shoe is acceptable.

Dress Down Days (earned through monetary contributions or contests): School appropriate shirts, shorts, pants, jeans, or dresses. No rips, tears, holes, leggings or jeggings. Any color is acceptable. Logos, writings must be school appropriate.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES

CD Players, Radios, MP3 Players, iPods, hand-held electronic games and recorders are not permitted at Tapp Middle School. Also prohibited are computerized “pets,”or other items which are not of an instructional nature. According to state law, students may have cell phones at school as long as they are not used during school hours and on the buses. Students who violate this policy will receive an initial warning. All other offenses will result in ISS or other disciplinary action. The school is not responsible for the loss, damage or theft of any of the above items. All items left unclaimed at the end of the school year will be donated to a local charity.

EXPECTATIONS

We expect you to grow in many ways while you are a student at Tapp. You will grow in your knowledge of academic subjects, performance of certain skills, and in ability to get along with other people. Self-discipline is one of the most important aspects of your success at Tapp, and our teamwork is focused on helping you develop this sense of responsibility for yourself and your actions. We expect all of our students to show their Tapp PRIDE through their Personal best, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Effort.

In order to be eligible for any dances or extracurricular activities, you must be in good standing in both academics and behavior. In addition, a student must be present in school at least ½ day on the day of the dance or extracurricular activity.

HOMEROOM

Homeroom is scheduled from 8:50 to 9:26 a.m. During this time, attendance is taken and announcements are made. When the buses arrive, each student should report directly to his/her respective homeroom.

HOMEWORK

We believe homework is a necessary tool in the educational process. We feel that homework is vital to reinforcing class work, providing extra skill practice, and preparing for testing, as well as strengthening responsibility and self-discipline skills. Homework, at all times, should be an extension of those skills introduced during the school day. You may go to the school website and review your teachers’ blogs for information on daily assignments and homework.

HONOR STUDENTS

RENAISSANCE RECOGNITION

Students at Tapp Middle School are honored for their academic accomplishments in school. Students receive special recognition for achieving the Principal’s Honor Roll, Tapp Honor Roll, Improved Grades, & Perfect Attendance.

Principal’s Honor Roll/Platinum:

All A’s in academics and all S’s in conduct at the end of each semester and has not served ISS or OSS.

Tapp Honor Roll/Gold:

A’s and B’s in academics and all S’s in conduct at the end of each semester and has not served ISS or OSS.

Perfect Attendance:

Students who have no absences for each semester.

IMMUNIZATION

To enter middle school, the state requires that all sixth graders have proof of immunity from chickenpox and a total of two MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella) inoculations. This information must be recorded on DHR Form 2131 or 3189. Effective July 1, 2014, all children born on or after January 1, 2002 who are entering 7th grade, and new entrants to Georgia Schools in grades 8-12 will be required to have Tdap (Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis) and meningococcal conjugate vaccines before entering school for the 2014-2015 school year. LOCKERS

Each student is provided with both a hall locker and a P. E. locker. Each locker has a built-in combination lock. Students may not attach an extra lock. All combinations are changed during the summer. It is very important for each student to memorize his/her hall and P. E. locker combinations immediately. Students should not share their locker combination with anyone.Students and parents are reminded that the use of a locker is a privilege and locker breaks may be suspended as determined by administration. As such, they are subject to inspection by the school administration. An inspection or search may occur at any time without prior notification to students or parents. We must insure the safety of each of our students from the presence of dangerous or illegal situations or substances.

LOITERING

It shall be unlawful for any person to remain upon the premises of any public school in the Cobb County School District when that person does not have a legitimate cause and/or need to be present thereon, and it shall be further unlawful for any person to loiter upon the premises of any public school in Cobb County. Students must leave campus immediately after dismissal and may not hang out around any part of the school campus. Pursuant to this law, each Principal or Principal’s designee shall exercise such control over the buildings and grounds upon which a school is located so as to prohibit any violation of the above and hereafter no person shall be allowed to remain upon such premises after normal school hours or after normal activity hours without the express written consent of the Superintendent or his designee.

LOST AND FOUND

Lost and Found clothing items are turned in to adesignated room. Valuable items (cell phones, wallets, purses, glasses, electronic devices, etc.) will be turned into the Front Office. Students may inquire about missing items through the Front Office. Students are required to have a signed and dated pass from a teacher to leave their assigned area. Please be sure that all jackets, sweaters, P. E. clothes, etc., are clearly labeled with yourchild’s name. At the end of each grading period a reminder is issued school-wide for students to check lost and found for their lost items. After this, all items are donated to a charitable organization.

LUNCH

Good nutrition plays an extremely important role in your child’s academic success. We offer a healthy and nutritious lunch to your child each day. In addition, breakfast is available before school. A copy of the daily menu is available on our website at are encouraged to complete a Free and Reduced Price Meal Application if you think you meet the eligibility standards. The applications are available at your child’s school prior to the first day of school or may be completed on-line. In addition, an application will be provided in the student folder that your child will receive on the first day of school. Once you have submitted a completed application, the notice of approval or disapproval will be sent home with your child. The processing time may take up to ten (10) working days for eligibility determination. Therefore, you will need to either pack a lunch for your child or give them money to purchase school meals.

If your child arrives at school without money for lunch, he/she will be provided an alternate meal (peanut butter sandwich and milk or cheese sandwich and milk). No alternate meal will be provided for breakfast. To prevent your child from having to receive an alternate meal, please ensure that you send money for your child’s meals each day. Prepayment of meals for your child is the best method of ensuring that they receive a meal. Prepayments are accepted daily in the cafeteria.

No food or beverage is allowed outside the cafeteria unless given specific permission by a staff member. Students must not have open containersunless in a lunch bag/box.

3. Keep hands and feet to yourself.

4. One trip through the lunch line.

5. Clean up after yourself.

MAKE-UP WORK

The assignments for the week may be posted on the teacher blogs. Parents may request work from the counselor for students who are absent for 3 or more days. In addition, a twenty-four hour notice is required for picking up books and assignments. Students should complete assignments within a number of days equal to the length of the absence. For example, a student will have two days after returning to school to make up work missed during a two day absence. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for missed assignments and to complete and turn in work missed due to absence.

Please remember that to leave a voice-mail message for a teacher, you must dial the school number (770) 222-3758. You may then follow the prompt to deliver your message. The voice mail extensions are on the school web page. You may also communicate with teachers via email, the preferred method of communication.

PARENT CONTACT INFORMATION

It is extremely important that parents keep the school advised of pertinent contact information. Contact information includes current home, work, cell phone numbers and address. Emergency contact information must also be kept updated as only listed persons will be allowed to pick up your child. To change contact information, contact the Attendance and/or the Front Office at 770-222-3758.

PERMISSION TO LEAVE CLASS

Students are required to have a signed and dated pass from a teacher to leave their assigned area. The first ten minutes and last ten minutes of class, students are not allowed to leave class. Medical Notification is required for any exceptions.

PROGRESS REPORTS

A part of our school to home communication is reporting progress to parents. Progress Reports are sent home every6 weeks. The Report Card at the end of each 18 week semester becomes part of the student’s permanent record. Parents should feel free to call or email teachers at any time if there are questions or concerns regarding their child’s grades. Dates will be posted on the school calendar and in information packets provided at the beginning of the year. In addition, call-outs or emails will announce when progress reports and report cards are sent home.

SOLICITATION ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

No person, firm, corporation, or business shall enter upon school property for any purpose of selling, trading, or bartering merchandise of any kind to a student, employee, school club or organization, nor shall any of the above enter upon school property for the purpose of soliciting money from a student, employee, school club or organization for any purpose other than approved exceptions. Advertising will be permitted only at the high school level with prior approval required by the Principal. Advertising and advertisement displays will be limited to outside field facilities for performance activities.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

After School Activities:

Students must be picked up no later than 15 minutesafter the scheduled end time of an after-school event.Failure to pick up students after the appropriate time may result in loss of participation in future after schoolevents.

Assemblies:

These are held for the education and entertainment of students. Good behavior/Tapp PRIDE is expected and illustrates a courteous respect for the presenter.
