Mary Abbott Hess Award for Recognition

of an Innovative Food & Culinary Effort

The purpose of the Mary Abbott Hess Award is to encourage RDs and DTRs to make original and innovative efforts (a publication, service, educational program, product, activity, etc.) in food and culinary education. The award recognizes the efforts of an individual primary originator/developer of a body of work. The award is not intended to recognize the efforts of a major group, corporation or governmental organization.

The recipient must:

1.  Be an Academy member and either a registered dietitian (RD) or a dietetic technician, registered (DTR).

2.  Submit an application including an essay describing the innovative effort in food and/or culinary education, including a brief description of the target audience or the problem addressed. The essay should describe the effort in terms of the five award criteria listed below. Essays should not be more than 10 pages typed and double-spaced.

3.  Submit a sample of the product or project if applicable.

Award Criteria: (all items are weighted equally)

·  Demonstrate an original and unique concept

·  Meet a food and culinary need of the intended market/target audience

·  Display creativity and professionalism in the execution or implementation of the effort

·  Offer expanded scope and reach compared to existing efforts that are similar

·  Describe the evaluation component and evidence of behavior change

Application Instructions

1.  Submit the face sheet, essay application and attachments electronically as a single document (multiple attachments will not be accepted) to Stacy Chassagne at by February 1st.

2.  All applications are reviewed by an Academy Foundation board-approved committee and selection is based established criteria for the award.

3.  All applicants and nominators will be notified of the award results.

4.  No application materials will be returned.

5.  Nominations or self-nominations are acceptable.

Other Information

1.  One, $1,000 award will be given annually.

2.  Award recipient will receive one complementary ticket to the Academy Foundation Gala.

For her television series, "DeLITEful Cooking Program."

1999  Janet Regan Klich

For her "A Culinary Arts Program: A Recipe for Life Skills," a community-based program to help teens after incarceration.

2000  Brenda J. Ponichtera, RD

For publishing two cookbooks, Quick & Healthy Recipes and Ideas and Quick & Healthy Volume II, that were the first to demonstrate that healthful cooking didn’t have to be time consuming.

2001  Ann A. Hertzler, PhD, RD

For her development of a Culinary Collection at the Virginia Tech Newman Library in Special Collections.

2002  Rosalind V. Benner, RD, LD

For her achievement in developing the video training series “The Three Dimensions in Pureed Diets.”

2003  Mildred Mattfeldt-Beman, PhD, RD, LD

For her efforts at Saint Louis University to establish a curricular thread in sustainable agriculture within the university’s dietetics program.

For her unique program, “Roots for the Home Team”, targeting at-risk youth empowering them to succeed by increasing their knowledge and appreciation for environment, agriculture, entrepreneurship and personal health.

2016 Peggy Policastro, PhD, RD

For collaborating with Rutgers Nutritional Sciences Department to develop the program entitled: “Innovative Strategies for Inter-professional Training in Culinary Medicine”.
