Teacher Contract Negotiations

Today the bargaining teams for Denver Public Schools and the Denver Classroom Teachers Association issued the following joint statement: “Both parties have reached a tentative agreement. Details of the tentative agreement will be released at a 10 a.m. news conference tomorrow (Wednesday, Aug. 25) at the DPS administration building, 900 Grant St. Neither party will release additional information prior to the news conference.”

Volunteer Policies and Procedures

This is a reminder that volunteers are required to complete a volunteer application and undergo a background check. This policy only excludes minors and parents working in their child’s classroom. It is not the practice of the school district to fingerprint volunteers.

The completed volunteer forms should be sent to Louise Gerber in the Office of Volunteer Services. Human Resources and Safety & Security check for criminal history on all volunteers through a Colorado Bureau of Investigation screening process. Once the background check is complete, the HR office returns the cleared forms to the Office of Volunteer Services. The Office of Volunteer Services notifies the school of a volunteer’s cleared status. This clearance process can up to two weeks. If a volunteer is not cleared, the volunteer and school will be notified immediately.

It is the district’s policy that volunteers may start working as soon as they complete the forms with the understanding that it is on a “probationary” basis, pending the results of the background screening. If a school chooses to do this, responsibility rests with that school to keep the volunteer under constant supervision. The Principal has the ability to overrule this policy if they choose to wait until they receive a clearance from the Office of Volunteer Services.

It is the responsibility of the school to notify the volunteer of their cleared status and arrange for the individual to begin volunteering. We also recommend schools to keep a copy each individual’s paperwork on file at the school. We request each school has a daily Sign-In, Sign-Out form to keep track of volunteer hours and monitor who is in the school.

Please keep a copy of these forms on file for your use. Questions? Please contact Louise Gerber, Supervisor, Office of Volunteer Services, at 303-764-3694 or .

Voter Registration Booths at Back-To-School Nights

The decision to allow or not to allow voter registration booths at back-to-school nights is a school option. You must treat this request to have a booth as you treat all other non-school groups. The group may also contact Kim Sanderson in Community Use at 303-764-3352 to sign up for a space in school facility under the facility use policy. Sign up and fees are available online.
