Assignment Description

With the rising populations in cities and pressing challenges around air quality and rising greenhouse emissions, Indian Cities are looking for innovating mechanisms to address the challenges. The National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020, published by the Government of India focuses on national energy security, address environmental impacts from road transport vehicles and support domestic manufacturing capabilities for electric vehicles (GoI, 2012). Eco Cities would be interested commission a study on the future of Electric Vehicles in India in the context of social, economic, and technological trends that are working together to disrupt transport at the local level. While the study will have a national focus, there will be deep dives conducted in four of the Eco cities namely Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai MMRDA(including Thane) and Bhubaneswar. The study would include
Building the case around Smart interventions in the urban transport sector through use of electric vehicles (public buses as well as two-three wheelers).
Along with Eco Cities team, Engaging with key stakeholders including urban transport agencies in the cities, manufacturers, technology providers, etc in the city with focus on Mumbai (Thane), Bangalore, Chennai etc.
Suggesting strategies and interventions around setting up charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) to travel and get charged at the same time for the Cities under consideration. This would be for electric buses as well as for two-three wheelers.
Identifying and analyzing the different cost elements(capital and O&M) for implementing EVs in India. This would also include costs of power from conventional sources as well as use of renewable energy(solar) in the future.
Developing Current and Future Scenarios around Capital and O&M costs around electric buses in India
Role of state/city governments to promote EVs by a range of interventions which can include
a) incentives that promote investments in charging infrastructure
b) setting local EV targets
c) priority for EVs in parking and traffic
d) Engaging with private sector(manufacturers, battery companies, etc).
