Content:
Math II is a NC Math curriculum which includes concepts that lay the foundation for more advanced mathematics courses. The class encompasses a variety of conceptual categories designed to span across the wide range of high school mathematics courses. These conceptual categories include:
• Number and Quantity • Algebra • Functions
• Modeling • Geometry • Statistics and Probability
Expectations:
Ø No eating or drinking in class with the exception of water.
Ø Be prepared.
o Bring all materials to class every day. (notebook, homework, pencil…)
Ø Be polite.
o Treat everyone in the classroom with respect and dignity.
Ø Pay attention.
o Do not distract yourself or others from learning.
o Listen actively, remain alert, and stay on task at all times.
o When we have group work, everyone should participate.
Ø Be prompt.
o Be in your seat and working when the bell rings.
o Tardies are not permitted. The student will be sent to the student center.
Ø Follow instructions the first time they are given.
Ø Follow school rules.
Ø Complete assignments. All work must be legible and in pencil. If I can’t read it, it’s wrong!! NO WORK, NO CREDIT!
Ø Daily attendance. There is no substitute for hearing and participating in class. However, if you are absent, check the website!
Ø Follow directions.
Ø Be responsible.
Ø NO CELL PHONES or electronics
Ø No sleeping in class.
Ø Wait to be recognized before speaking.
Ø Remain seated unless otherwise instructed.
Ø Keep all work (quizzes, homework, classwork, notes, …) in your notebooks
Consequences for inappropriate behavior will be handled in accordance with my classroom management plan: Verbal Reprimand and Office Referral.
STUDENTS who commit the following infractions will receive an immediate referral to the Administration: fighting, skipping class, abusive language toward the teacher, dress code violation, and/or blatant disrespect or defiance.
Rewards: For good behavior I will drop the lowest quiz grade each six weeks.
Extra Credit: As a standard rule, I do not give extra work to earn extra credit in my class.
Extra Help: Math concepts build on each other. Therefore, don’t wait, if you have questions ask them during class or see me about coming after or before school.
Restroom/Water Fountain Passes: A student cannot learn if he or she is not in the classroom. Students are expected to use the restroom between classes and during lunch. Students have been given a sheet with bathroom passes on it. Passes can only be used during independent practice and after the completion of a test or a quiz. Any passes not used will be used as extra credit on a test. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with this sheet. There will be no additional passes given if a student loses their sheet. If you have to go to the restroom and you do not have your passes, you have to stay after school the following day. Once these passes are used a student may be allowed to go at the teacher’s discretion.
Attendance: Attending class daily is a vital part of a student’s success in this course. Students are allowed to miss a total of 8 class periods. For excused absences students must turn in a note to the front office within 48 hours.
Makeup Work: MAKE-UP PROCEDURES
Ø Be sure to get assignments and notes when you are absent. Check the website: http:// amandalstanley.wikispaces.com
Ø Make-up classwork and homework should be turned in within 5 school days of being absent. See me within 2 days of being
absent to make a plan.
Ø Tests and quizzes must be made-up within 5 school days after school. Make-up tests and quizzes will be different from those
given during class.
Ø If you are going to be absent for several days, it is a good idea to email or check the website to get your assignments.
Ø It is your responsibility to get your make-up work. Any missed work that is not made up will be given a grade of zero.
Homework/Classwork: Homework and classwork will be assigned on a daily basis in order to practice the skills we learn in class and will be checked based on completion or accuracy. I will check homework often. When checked for completion, you will either receive full or half credit. In order to get credit you must: Number your problems, have the problems copied from the packet, and show all necessary work. I will not accept late homework unless there are extenuating circumstances.
Quizzes: May or may not be announced. Includes notebook quizzes.
Tests: Tests will always be announced. A test will be given at the end of each unit and can fall on any day of the week. Most tests will include cumulative questions to prepare students for the final. Cumulative tests may be given throughout the semester. These tests will be announced.
Math 2 will have a teacher made exam that will count as 25% of the students’ final grade. Students may be exempt from the teacher made exam. Math 2 students will also take a required NC Final Field Test. If a student does not take the field test, they will receive a zero for their final exam grade.
Exam exemptions: Students may be exempt from teacher made exams if their final average is 90 with 3 or less absences OR their final average is 80 with 2 or less absences. Students must also have fewer than 3 absences in all of their classes to be exempt from the teacher made exam.
GRADING PROCEDURES AND POLICY
The CHS grading scale will be utilized: A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (60-69), and F (59 and below). To get full credit on your homework and classwork you must show your work (steps) and be turned in on time. All homework and classwork should be done in pencil. Talking during a quiz or test may result in a zero! Cheating on a quiz or test will result in a zero, a parent contact, and a referral to the administration. Your grade will be earned the following way in my class:
Tests: 55% Quizzes: 30% Homework/Class-work: 15%
Student progress maybe checked online throughout the semester. Report cards sent home on October 18th and December 2nd.
If you or your parent(s)/guardian(s) have any questions or concerns about the above information, please feel free to contact me. Emailing me is the best way of contacting me.
Dear Parent or Guardian:
I am very excited to welcome you and your child to Math II! Today in class your child received handouts regarding class expectations, grading procedures, and required materials. Please take the time to read over this information.
Communication between teachers and parents is important in student learning. I email parent updates about what we are covering in class and assessments frequently. I will also post these updates on my website. Please email me to ensure I have your correct email to form our Math 2 group. If you do not have access to an email account, please send in a note telling me how you would like to receive updates (send the note home, mail).
Math II will be a fast paced and challenging course. Students will have to be willing to put forth a good deal of effort. This includes, but is not limited to, coming to class regularly, doing all work assigned, studying, and never giving up. Therefore, they need your support and involvement. You can access student grades on line through Power School. Also, please look for progress reports every three weeks and feel free to email or call me as soon as a concern comes up or to discuss student progress. The earlier we identify a concern, the better.
Please sign the bottom of the Student Information Sheet, acknowledging that you understand and have read the course syllabus. Please have your child return the Student information sheet as soon as possible.
Again, if at any time you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at the high school by phone at 252-393-7022 or email at
