POST TITLE / Area worker (Over 50’s)
GRADE / SUG 4, Subject to pay and grading, 37 hours
RESPONSIBLE TO / Area Development Officer
RESPONSIBLE FOR / Volunteers, casual coaches and/or assistants from employment
initiatives
PURPOSE OF JOB / To deliver a range of high quality sport and physical activity opportunities that are progressive and reflective of the needs of older adults in the local community.
To develop a team of local coaches and volunteers in the community through signposting and mentoring that will enhance community capacity in conjunction with key partner agencies.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To deliver high quality services to the people of Sheffield and in so doing:-
  • create a positive image of the service amongst users, partners and the wider community
  • achieve continuous service improvement both in terms of quality and value for money
  • meet the diverse needs of the community
  • Contribute to the City Council’s objectives and priorities

To effectively design, plan and deliver a range of high quality activity sport and physical activity opportunities, including chair based activity, multi-sports and fitness sessions in a range of settings including sheltered accommodation sites, day care centres, care homes, and community centres that are accessible to all older adults.
To work with partner agencies to identify local volunteers and sign post them to coach education and physical activity training opportunities. To contribute to the development of a comprehensive coach education/development programme and mentor local coaches to improve skills and confidence.
To effectively supervise, mentor and direct support staff, and volunteers as appropriate.
To imaginatively promote local physical activity opportunities to older adults in sheltered accommodation, day care centres and community settings.
To take positive steps to identify and overcome barriers to participation amongst over 50’s
To assist in identifying older adults who may wish to become volunteers and assist in developing and delivering physical activity and sport opportunities
To undertake training and continuous professional development as necessary relevant to the post and further career advancement.
To sign post community groups, professionals and local workers to appropriate funding opportunities.
To conform to the City council’s financial procedures.
11 / To assist in the collation of monitoring and customer feedback information as required by Activity Sheffield and funding bodies.
To input data collected from sessions into Activity Sheffield’s monitoring database (IMS)
To develop and maintain effective and positive working relationships with all partners and community organisations.
To respond to general enquiries and deal efficiently with any administrative requirements resulting from the implementation of activities e.g. production of activity registers.
To carry out all duties and responsibilities in accordance with agreed Council policy and procedures: in particular the Council’s Code of Conduct and it’s polices on Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety.

Minimum Essential Requirements / Method of
Assessment
Skills and Knowledge:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Excellent planning and organisational skills
Ability to evaluate sessions and provide quality feedback to participants and coaches / volunteers
Ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines demonstrating a methodical approach whilst maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to remain calm, efficient and professional whilst working under pressure.
Ability to monitor and control financial and non-financial resources.
Ability to produce basic reports
Ability to motivate coaches, officials, volunteers and older adults.
Experience/Qualifications/Training:
RSA/YMCA/Keep Fit Association/Extend qualification or equivalent (Level 2 min)
First Aid Qualified
Experience of delivering physical activity/sport opportunities to over 50’s in a range of settings.
Experience of mentoring volunteers, working with and developing volunteers and assistant coaches.
Experience of organising sessions for participants for Sport England Priority Groups e.g. people with disabilities/ethnic minorities.
A commitment to undertake relevant training as required
Work Related Circumstances:
Ability to work constructively both on own initiative and as part of a team.

Able to work flexibly to meet the needs of the community e.g. evenings, weekends as required.
