SELECTIVE UNIT 3 (S03)

(Electronic Book/e-Book)

Unit Statement: An electronic book (eBook) provides the opportunity to engage with texts in ways that a print book cannot offer. The student will use the BryteWave software and App to read a Follett Destiny Library Manager (Destiny) eBook. The student will learn how to use eBook tools and features to support and enhance their reading and comprehension. It is of equal importance to instill a need to read for pleasure.

Each student should be provided with a Follett Destiny Library Manager (Destiny) patron login (i.e., username and password).

Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)

1.  The Student Will read a Follett eBook using BryteWave.

2.  TSW demonstrate using basic eBook features, including:

·  Bookmark

·  Dictionary

·  Display options

·  Highlighting

·  Notes

·  Search

·  Text to speech

3.  TSW participate in classroom discussion on the eBook reading experience. Guiding questions may include the following:

·  How does reading an eBook compare to reading a print book?

·  What frustrations or challenges have you encountered so far?

·  What do you like about reading an eBook?

·  Does the eBook experience change the way you read? How and why?

·  How did the tools and features support and enhance your reading and comprehension?

4.  TSW participate in classroom discussion on the note-taking process. Guiding questions may include the following:

·  How are the digital notes similar to or different from a literature response journal?

·  How did you decide when to insert a note?

·  How did you decide what to write in your notes?

·  What kinds of notes did you write?

Introduced Outcomes:

1.  The Student Will understand the purpose of a fiction book review.

2.  TSW evaluate fiction book reviews written by others.

Practiced Outcomes:

1.  The Student Will choose and read an age level appropriate book.

2.  TSW demonstrate the proper care and handling of library materials.

3.  TSW follow the prescribed library procedures.

4.  TSW maintain and respect an appropriate quiet environment within the library.

5.  TSW listen attentively during times of library instruction.

·  Refer to the Destiny ‘How do I…’ help feature for detailed information and instructions.

Internet Resources:

Past library curriculum included lists of websites. Unfortunately, website links often change. For this reason, it is best to conduct Internet searches at the point-of-need. For example, to find lesson plans enter the keywords – free elementary library lesson plans – into an Internet search engine (i.e., Bing, Google).
