Maintenance Journeyman Plumber
Definition
Maintain the plumbing of the physical school plant of Roseburg School District in a condition of excellence enabling full educational use of facilities at all times. Perform skilled and general labor inside and outside the physical plant when appropriate.

Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this classification are distinguished from other maintenance classifications, in that the majority of assignments require the performance of journeyman-level skills as a plumber. Supervision of helpers may be a regular or occasional responsibility.
Experience
§ Must have been actively engaged in work as a licensed journeyman plumber for a minimum of five (5) years work experience.
Education
§ High school graduation or evidence of GED completion.
Qualifications
§ Physical ability to perform strenuous inside work and outside work in all weather conditions.
§ “Back Flow Assembly Tester” certification required.
§ Record of dependability, flexibility and regular attendance. Must possess a strong work ethic.
§ Proven ability to work independently required.
§ Willingness to be a positive role model for our students.

Language skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with small groups of employees and/or patrons about District physical plant and plumbing projects.
Mathematical skills:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as measurements, proportions, statistics, load requirements, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Other skills and abilities:
Ability to pass District physical examination and substance abuse screening. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Policies.
License:
§ Possess a valid Oregon motor vehicle operator’s license, absent of serious driving infractions within the last five (5) years.
Special Requirements
§ No beards or facial hair that will prevent the seal of type “C” respirator.
§ Employees must have facial features capable of fitting a type “C” respirator.
§ Employees must submit to and pass a pulmonary function test, a “B” read chest x-ray, cardiovascular fitness test and fill out a questionnaire on medical history and past work history dealing with asbestos.
§ Employee must be a non-smoker and sign a non-smoking agreement.
§ Employee must agree to periodic training schools dealing with asbestos control.
§ Employee must be able to lift 75 pounds.
Performance Responsibilities
§ Plans layouts, installs and repairs plumbing and equipment, apparatus and control equipment. Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials.
§ Estimate labor, material and equipment needed for assigned projects; monitor inventory levels of materials and equipment; order, receive and maintain inventory of materials and equipment as needed.
§ Maintains consistency with specifications and state plumbing codes.
§ Prepares sketches showing location of plumbing and equipment or follows diagrams or blueprints prepared by others.
§ Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assemble and install plumbing piping.
§ Install, maintain and repair valves, control devices, pumps, toilets, heaters, boilers, pipes, clocks, relays, faucets and various other fixtures, parts and equipment; rebuild and replace valves and faucets as needed; replace leaking and defective parts in plumbing fixtures and systems.
§ Makes appropriate tests of cross flow connections to insure compliance and safety of all components using standard instruments.
§ Observes functioning of installed equipment or systems to detect operation performance and the need for adjustment, relocation or replacement.
§ Repairs faulty equipment or systems and performs such other duties as may be assigned if within the usual scope of this employment. Fulfills other related duties as assumed or assigned.

Work environment:
While performing the duties of journeyman plumber, the employee will regularly work both outdoors and indoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products. Frequently the employee will work alone and occasionally will work irregular or extended hours. The noise level in the work environment is often loud and will require use of hearing protection.

While performing the duties of journeyman plumbing maintenance, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms such as to operate machinery. The employee is occasionally required to sit, and must frequently squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward, and bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than average while performing the duties of this job. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on ladders up to 25 feet.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as a toolbox or building materials. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move with assistance up to 90 pounds such as building materials or heavy furniture; and the employee will occasionally push or pull large and/or heavy items such as scaffolds or cabinets. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
