Chemical Bonds and Compounds

Imagine that you have been hired by an educational television program to write a song or poem about one type of chemical bond (ionic, covalent or metallic). Your song or poem should include title, and introductory verse, and verse about how the atoms combine to form the bond, and a verse about the properties of a compound with that bond. End with a verse that wraps up the song or poem. Write your verses in rhyme or near-rhyme. Put the words to music or pattern. You can use a familiar tune or poem and write your lyrics to fit the pattern, or you can make up a tune to go along with your lyrics. Perform your song or poem for the class.

The following is a specific clarification of all the information that should be present in your song or poem verses.

Definition of the chosen bond

Identify the shape or structure of the specific bond (molecular or crystal)

Transferring or sharing of electrons

An example of a compound with the specific bond (NaCl, CH4, Zn2)

Properties (all information found in D 2.3 of the text book)

What happens when compounds with the specific type of bond are added to water?

Does the bond conduct heat or electricity?

Are compounds with the bond typically brittle/soft/moldable?

What are the general melting or boiling points of the specific bond?

What is the general state of matter at room temperature?
