Housetraining

All Animals born in a nest can be housetrained, as they are naturally pre-programmed to keep their bed clean. All you have to do is teach your puppy that the whole of your house is his nest.It is possible to housetrain a puppy very quickly. The secret lies in being very vigilant (puppies have immature brains and bodies can’t hold on for long) and taking your puppy out regularly to the place where he should go to the toilet. Keep an eye on him when he is in the house. Always know where he is and what he is up to. If he begins to circle and sniff the ground, starts to whine, walks about looking uncomfortable or looks as though he is concentrating with a faraway look in his eyes, take him outside. When puppies feel the need to go, they need to go outside quickly, so don’t delay.

YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR PUPPY OUT:

  • After he eats
  • After he’s been playing
  • After any excitement
  • After he’s been sleeping or resting
  • Every one to two hours

Go out with him, even if it is raining. Allow him to run around and sniff, as both of these actions will help him relax and make it more likely that he will go to the toilet. Praise him gently when he begins to go.

Stay outside with him even if it is cold and raining. If you are not there to watch him, he will turn his attention to getting back into the safety of the house and will still need to go when you let him back in.

When visitors arrive, it is easy to forget about your puppy’s needs, but the excitement of greeting new people may cause him to need to relieve himself, so remember to take him out to the garden as soon as things have settled down.

If you keep to this routine and you are patient and vigilant enough, your puppy should be housetrained within a few weeks.

Common Questions and answers –

Q. What should I do if I see him going t the toilet in the house?

A: Try not to get cross, make a loud clap with your hands to distract him and then get him out to the garden as fast as possible, stay outside with him and as he starts to go to the toilet, offer plenty or praise and reward.

Q. What is the best way to clean up the mess?

A. Clean up any accidents with a solution of biological washing powder or tonic water. The enzymes in these will kill the ammonia present in urine and distract your puppy from coming back to the same place.
