Instrument donations vital to program, student success

DPS, in partnership with the Dayton Philharmonic Volunteer Association, is accepting donations of gently used musical instruments for use in district programs.

Since the drive began more than six years ago, hundreds of instruments have found their way to Dayton schools, creating band programs where there were none and helping students to discover their musical talents.

The public can drop off musical instruments at the Second Street Public Market, 600 E. Second St., between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Dec. 5 or Dec. 12. Musical instruments also will be accepted at the DPS Administration Building, 115 S. Ludlow St. For more information, call DPVA It’s Instrumental at 848-6030.

DPS family day at Boonshoft a huge success!

DPS families with children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade were invited to enjoy a free day of family fun at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery on Nov. 21, which included admission to the museum, entrance to the planetarium, live animals, tours, and a nature walk. Our response was excellent; about 1,500 attended. The crowd was so great that the museum closed its doors to other visitors to accommodate our DPS families. It’s all part of the yearlong parent and family involvement program sponsored by the Dayton Public Schools Office of School Improvement and External Resources. Any DPS family with children in pre-kindergarten through eight grade is welcome to take part in these activities. Four more events are planned in the months ahead: Dayton Art Institute (Jan. 30, 2010), Downtown Dayton Library (Feb. 27, 2010), United States Air Force Museum (March 30, 2010), and Carillon Historical Park (May 16, 2010).

“Parent Connection” airs on DPS-TV

The new Title 1 parent program “Parent Connection” features guest experts and a studio audience, and airs live on Thursdays from 6:00-7:00 p.m. on DPS-TV (Time Warner Cable Channel 21), with repeats on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Viewers also may catch the show at their convenience, via DPS-TV on-demand video, available through a link at the bottom of the district Web site (www.dps.k12.oh.us). A copy of the show is available at all Title I elementary schools in the Parent Resource Room.

Math Olympics

Our 19th annual DPS Math Olympics will be held at Thurgood Marshall High School on Dec. 12. DPS students from our preK-8 schools will participate in a number of exciting team competitions. We look forward to seeing our DPS families and supporters at this event to cheer our students on to victory. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs through 12:30 p.m., followed by an awards program.

DPS offers credit recovery

The Dayton Public Schools credit recovery program has been newly upgraded, with expanded course offerings to give students the opportunity to earn credits for courses previously taken and failed. The program is open to all six DPS high schools. Cost is a one-time $50 application fee, payable by money order only. For more information, contact Krista Guy, DPS distance learning coordinator, at 542-3024.

Math Homework Hotline on DPS TV

Our weekly live call-in show, 25 years on the air this October, is still successful in getting kids to tune in and work on their homework with program hosts. The show airs at 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday on Time Warner 21, from the brand-new studio at the David H. Ponitz Career Technology Center. The show has received local and national accolades, including Hometown USA, regional Philo Awards and two Telly Awards.

Principal for A Day

Local and state leaders will experience a “day in the life” of DPS school leaders during our 6th annual Principal for a Day on Friday, Dec. 4. The event was developed to provide business and community leaders with perspective on the strengths and challenges of Dayton’s educators as they serve the city’s youth. We welcome our guests and look forward to hearing about their day at a reception in their honor Friday afternoon.
