Medical Abbreviations &

Terminology Project/Rubric

Due Date: ______

Project Objectives: To become familiar with commonly used medical abbreviations and terminology. To understand how prefixes, suffixes, and root words can be used to interpret the meaning of a word. To create a children’s story book, comic strip, scrap book, etc. that uses ten medical abbreviations and ten medical terms from Unit 5 (6th edition) or Chapter 6 (7th edition) of our textbook.

Background

The language and abbreviations used by the medical community can be difficult for many patients to understand, and are especially difficult for young children. In this project, select an illustrated product (ie. story book, comic strip, scrap book, etc.) that would easily convey information about a disease or medical condition/topic to a young child. Be creative! For example, your story might be “Harry has a Heart,” and focus on the various heart diseases, good nutrition, the types of doctors Harry would have to see, etc. The goal is to create a story that a child would understand, and one that would teach them the meanings of medical abbreviations and terminology they might encounter if they (or a family member/friend) were to experience this medical condition. Your product may be handwritten and hand-drawn, or typed with computer images. If you would like to complete a project other than a story book, comic strip, or scrap book, be sure to discuss your choice with your instructor.
