Things to Remember!

  1. Always use a lead (leash) when moving of handling any dogs.
  1. If an animal is in a run or cage and you are scared or uncomfortable with that animal, please do not handle it! Animals can sense your fear and uneasiness, get assistance from a Staff member.
  1. Report all aggressive animals to a SEVHS Staff member immediately. This includes growling, cowering, hissing, and scratching. It can be dangerous to break up a dog fight. Don’t panic, call for help right away!! And above all, keep your safety utmost in your mind.
  1. Do NOT allow animals to get close to each other. This could pass along diseases or cause a fight. ALWAYS check with a Staff member on duty if you are unfamiliar with an animal before holding or walking it. You must also wait for a Staff member to hook up an animal to a leash unless O.K.’d to do so without assistance.
  1. Report any unusual animal behavior or injury you see to a Staff member.
  1. Any kennel or cage marked with QUARANTINE or EMPLOYEES ONLY sign, is strictly off limits to all volunteers unless instructed otherwise.
  1. All cuts, scrapes, bites, or injuries of any kind you must report it immediately to the Volunteer Coordinator or Kennel Manager, no matter how minor.
  1. Never hold an animal at your face or put your face in the animals face, you could be bitten!
  1. If an animal get loose, close the doors. Do not chase the animal, let it go where it wants and let it calm down. Get help if needed and KEEP A SOLID OBJECT BETWEEN AN AGGRESSIVE DOG AND YOU.
  1. Don’t go into a run and close it behind you. If an animal becomes frightened or aggressive while you are in the cage, you will not be able to get out and you could be seriously injured. Try to get the animal to come to you first, outside the kennel.
  1. If an animal is sleeping, wake it up first by clapping your hands or calling its name from outside its kennel, before putting on a leash or handling it.
  1. When handling cats, a lot of the above information applies to them also. You must sanitize your hands after handling each cat.
  1. Most of all, we want you to have fun with our furry friends while giving them some much deserved love!
