EXPERIENCE

SENIOR FELLOW: INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITIES (IAU), Paris, France (July 2010-present)

IAU is a global higher education association dedicated to building community and strengthening higher education worldwide. This position is part-time; based in New York City. As Senior Fellow, I co-designed and lead IAU’s Strategy Advisory Service (ISAS) and its successor, ISAS 2.0, available to institutions worldwide to help them develop and refine their internationalization goals, strategies, and assessment processes. Since 2010, I chaired the international visiting team to review the internationalization strategies of Ho Chi Minh University of Transport (Vietnam), University of Botswana, Universidad Científica del Perú, Universidad de la Rioja (Argentina), Mykolas Romeris University (Lithuania), Moi University (Kenya), Hokkaido University (Japan), Cardiff Metropolitan University (Wales).

I served as lead expert for IAU project with Romania: “Internationalisation, equity and institutional management for a quality higher education.” Served as member of leadership team to develop and monitor the project, member ofsteering committee to develop a national strategy for internationalization;and team member undertaking four of 20 visits to Romanian Universities to conduct workshops on Strategic Planning Management (2014-15).

SENIOR FELLOW, NAFSA: THE ASSOCATION OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATORS (December 2010-present)

NAFSA has named six Senior Fellows for two-year terms to serve as a think-tank on internationalization issues. Senior Fellows advise NAFSA on future directions, contribute to series of special focus papers and Trends and Insights, and present on their work at national and international meetings

SENIOR PROGRAM CONSULTANT: THE TEAGLE FOUNDATION (June 2012-present)

I worked with prospective grantees to shape proposals, review proposals, contribute to preparation for board meetings, develop new grant programs, and plan topical forums (2012-14). Current work includes serving as evaluator for Teagle grant initiative “Faculty Participation and Curricular Coherence.”

The American Council on Education is the major voluntary coordinating body for U.S. higher education, with a membership of 1,700 institutions and more than 200 associations. My responsibilities expanded and changed over the years. As assistant director of the Program on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction, I managed this new initiative on recognizing prior learning. In 1978, my responsibilities shifted to designing and managing higher education leadership and management programs, including directing

the ACE Fellows Program. From 1991 to 2010, I took on additional responsibility as architect and implementer of ACE’s international agenda. Until 2006, I also continued to oversee several leadership development programs and designed and led a five-year initiative on institutional change.

Major accomplishments:

·  Designed and implemented ACE’s extensive international agenda. Raised $15 million external funding over 10 years. Among the projects developed were a $6.7 USAID-funded project to develop the capacity of South African further education and training colleges to enhance their capacity for workforce development (2009-2010); an extensive project on strategic planning and management capacity building with 15 historically disadvantaged institutions in South Africa (1992-2001); multiple projects on developing institutional international strategies and internationalizing the curriculum; programs and publications on the nexus between the U.S. diversity agenda and internationalization.

·  Designed and implemented a series of initiatives to strengthen institutional capacity for internationalization: the Leadership Network on International Education (program for presidents and provosts); the Internationalization Collaborative (a network of 100 institutions); the Internationalization Laboratory (an intensive engagement with a cohort of 6 to 8 institutions per year to guide them in reviewing and strengthening their internationalization goals and strategies; Global Learning for All (a foundation-funded project to hone a methodology for reviewing and planning campus internationalization.)

·  Created a series of international meetings for U.S. presidents and their counterparts from abroad.

·  Designed, obtained funding, and directed $1.2 million foundation-funded project on leadership and institutional change supporting the transformation efforts of 26 institutions and contributing to a national discussion on change in higher education.

·  Designed and implemented leadership development programs for college and university presidents, department chairs, deans, chief academic officers.

·  As director of the ACE Fellows Program, which identifies and prepares promising leaders in higher education, successfully diversified participation in the program to increase the numbers of women and people of color; established an alumnae network, annual fund, and extensive alumni program; raised continuous funding from the major national foundations.

·  Initiated first comprehensive longitudinal study of college and university presidents’ career paths, providing the public with research-based information on leadership in higher education. Initiated first longitudinal study of U.S. campus internationalization policies and practices.

·  Chaired ACE strategic planning process; developed process for program review.

MOUNT VERNON COLLEGE, Washington DC (1990-91)

Interim President

Led women’s liberal arts college of 500 students and 100 faculty and staff through year of crisis and transition. Managed $9 million budget.

·  Engaged community in strategic planning and prepared college for transition.

·  Explored a merger with local universities.

·  Raised $1 million from alumnae in three months to address most urgent financial needs.

·  Opened lines of communication among faculty, staff and board members, resulting in successful presidential search and ability to establish long-term strategic plan.

·  Facilitated the development of a faculty handbook.

·  Reduced budget by $1 million to put college in better financial equilibrium.
