ACOUSTICAL CEILINGS
(Edited from DeCA June 2017 Design Criteria)
This Section specifies certain requirements and procedures pertaining to sustainable resources and construction practices that are to be performed by the Contractor.
This Section does not specify requirements for planning and design which are addressed in the DeCA Design Criteria Handbook Division 1 Section 013329, Sustainable Design Reporting, that are the responsibility of the A/E.
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
- Section Includes:
- Ceilings composed of acoustical panels and exposed suspension systems.
- Related Sections:
- Division01 Section Sustainable Design Reporting for recycled content of products.
1.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTSs
- Seismic Performance:
- Acoustical ceiling system shall withstand the effects of earthquake motions determined according to the following:
- ASCE/SEI 7-10, Chapter 13, as referenced by the IBC 2012 and as modified by UFC 3-310-04.
- IBC 2012 as referenced by UFC-3-310-04.
- UFC 3-310-04 and Section 2-13.5.6 (Supplement) Suspended Ceilings.
- Risk Category of Building: As indicated on Structural Drawings.
- Seismic Zone: As indicated on Structural Drawings.
Retain "Delegated Design" Paragraph below if Contractor is required to assume responsibility for design of seismic restraints and attachment devices.
- Delegated Design:
- Engage a qualified professional engineer, as defined in Division 1 Section "Reference Standards and Definitions," to design and size acoustical panel ceiling system components, including comprehensive engineering analysis, in accordance with seismic performance requirements.
- Refer to Division 1 Section "Description of Work" for seismic design load data.
1.3 SUBMITTALS
- Product Data:
- For each type of acoustical panel specified.
- LEED Submittals:
- Product Data for CreditMR4: For products having recycled content, documentation indicating percentages by weight of postconsumer and preconsumer recycled content.
- Include statement indicating costs for each product having recycled content.
"Product Data for CreditIEQ4" Subparagraph below applies to LEED-NC; coordinate with requirements for sealants.
- Product Data for CreditIEQ4: For sealants, documentation including printed statement of VOC content.
Retain below if delegated design for seismic is required..
- Delegated-Design Submittal:
- For design of acoustical ceiling system withstanding the effects of earthquake motions.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE
- Installer Qualifications:
- Engage an experienced Installer who has completed acoustical panel ceilings similar in material, design, and extent to that indicated for this Project and with a record of successful in-service performance.
- Single-Source Responsibility for Ceiling Units and Suspension System:
- Obtain acoustical ceiling panel and suspension system from a single source with resources to provide products of consistent quality in appearance and physical properties without delaying the Work.
- Fire-Test-Response Characteristics:
- Provide acoustical panel ceilings that comply with the following requirements:
- Surface-Burning Characteristics: Provide acoustical panels with the following surface-burning characteristics complying with ASTME1264 for ClassA materials as determined by testing identical products per ASTME84:
1) Smoke-Developed Index: 50 or less for Class A ceiling.
- Seismic Standard:
- Provide acoustical panel ceilings designed and installed to withstand the effects of earthquake motions indicated in Division 01 Section Summary of Work, according to ASCE 7-05, "Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures," Section 13, "Seismic Design Requirements for Nonstructural Components."
- Testing Agency Qualification:
- Qualified according to NVLAP for testing indicated.
1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
- Deliver acoustical panels and suspension system components to Project site in original, unopened packages and store them in a fully enclosed space where they will be protected against damage from moisture, direct sunlight, surface contamination, and other causes. Before installing acoustical panels, permit them to reach room temperature and a stabilized moisture content. Handle acoustical panels carefully to avoid chipping edges or damaging units in any way.
1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS
- Space Enclosure and Environmental Limitations: Do not install acoustical panel ceilings until spaces are enclosed and weatherproof, wet-work in spaces is completed and dry, ambient temperature and humidity conditions are being maintained at the levels indicated for Project when occupied for its intended use, and work above ceilings is complete and accepted by Government.
1.7 COORDINATION
- Coordinate layout and installation of acoustical panels and suspension system components with other construction that penetrates ceilings or is supported by them, including light fixtures, HVAC equipment, fire-suppression system components (if any), and partition assemblies (if any).
1.8 EXTRA STOCK
- General:
- Furnish extra materials described below that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents.
- Acoustical Ceiling Panels:
- Full-size panels equal to 1.0 percent of quantity installed.
- Suspension System Components:
- Quantity of each exposed component equal to 1.0 percent of quantity installed.
- Seismic Clips:
- Equal to 1.0 percent of amount installed.
1.9 WARRANTY
- General Warranty:
- The special warranties specified in this Article shall not deprive the Government of other rights the Government may have under other provisions of the Contract Documents and shall be in addition to, and run concurrent with, other warranties made by the Contractor under requirements of the Contract Documents.
- Special Acoustical Panel Ceiling System Warranty:
- Submit a written warranty executed by acoustical panel ceiling system manufacturer to repair or replace acoustical panel ceiling system that falls within the warranty period. Failures include, but are not limited to:
- Acoustical Panels: Sagging or warping.
1) Warranty Period: Ten years from date of Substantial Completion.
- Grid System: Rusting and manufacturing defects.
1) Warranty Period: Ten years from date of Substantial Completion.
- Mold, Mildew, and Bacteria Resistance.
1) Warranty Period: 30 years from date of Substantial Completion.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
- Basis-of-Design Products: To establish the significant qualities related to type, function, dimension, inservice performance, physical properties, appearance, and other characteristics for purposes of evaluating comparable products of other manufacturers, a specific manufacturer's product is named and accompanied by the words "basis of design," including make or model number or other designation. Subject to compliance with requirements, provide either the named products or equal products.
2.2 ACOUSTICAL PANELS, GENERAL
- Acoustical Panel Standard:
- Provide manufacturer's standard panels of configuration indicated that comply with ASTME1264 classifications as designated by types, patterns, acoustical ratings, and light reflectances, unless otherwise indicated.
- Mounting Method for Measuring Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC): ASTM C 423.
- Test Method for Ceiling Attenuation Class (CAC): Where acoustical panel ceilings are specified to have a CAC, provide units identical to those tested per ASTME1414 by a qualified testing agency.
- Acoustical Panel Colors and Patterns:
- Match appearance characteristics indicated for each product type.
2.3 ACOUSTICAL PANELS
- Acoustical Panel Characteristics:
- Provide panels complying with ASTME1264 and Basis-Of-Design Product for characteristics described below:
- Pattern: CE (perforated, small holes and lightly textured).
- Type and Form: Type III, mineral base with washable painted finish; Form 2 units, water felted.
- Colors: White.
- NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient): 0.55.
- CAC (Ceiling Attenuation Class): 35.
- LR (Light Reflectance): 0.85
- Edge/Joint Detail: Angled Tegular for interface with basis-of-design exposed tee grid system.
- Thickness: 5/8 inch.
- Modular Size: 24 by 24 inches.
- Sag resistant.
- Broad Spectrum Antimicrobial Fungicide and Bactericide Treatment: Provide acoustical panels treated, on surface and back of panels, with manufacturer's standard antimicrobial formulation that inhibits fungus, mold, mildew, and gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and showing no mold, mildew, or bacterial growth when tested according to ASTM D 3273.
- Basis-of-Design Product:
- Armstrong World Industries, Inc.
- Type: Fine fissured tegular.
- Item Number: 1732.
- Dimensional Stability: HumiGuard Plus. Resistance to high humidity conditions.
- Mold and Mildew Resistance: Surface and back treated with BioBlock paint containing a special biocide that inhibits or retards growth of mold and mildew.
If more than one acoustical ceiling is required, give each set of panel and suspension systems a ceiling designation, such as "APC-1" for the first set and “APC-2” for the second, and create an additional set of requirements and products for each variation.
2.4 METAL SUSPENSION SYSTEMS, GENERAL
- Metal Suspension-System Standard:
- Provide manufacturer's standard direct-hung metal suspension systems of types, structural classifications, and finishes indicated that comply with applicable requirements in ASTM C 635.
- Recycled Content Criteria: 25 percent.
- Attachment Devices:
- Size for five times design load indicated in ASTM C 635, Table 1, Direct Hung unless otherwise indicated. Comply with seismic design requirements.
- Wire Hangers, Braces, and Ties:
- Provide wires complying with the following requirements
- Zinc-Coated, Carbon-Steel Wire: ASTM A 641, Class 1 zinc coating, soft temper.
- Size: Select wire diameter so its stress at three times hanger design load (ASTM C 635, Table 1, Direct-Hung), will be less than yield stress of wire, but provide not less than 0.106-inch diameter wire.
2.5 METAL SUSPENSION SYSTEM
- Wide-Face Capped Double-Web Steel Suspension System:
- Main and cross-runners roll-formed from commercial-quality hot dipped galvanized steel coating. Exposed surfaces chemically cleansed, capping prefinished galvanized steel in baked polyester. 15/16-inch wide metal caps on flanges; other characteristics as follows:
- Structural Classification: [Intermediate] [Heavy]-Duty System.
- Cross Tees: Light gauge steel with rotary stitching to improve column strength and staked-on end detail allowing easy cross tee removal and remounting.
- End Condition of Cross-Runners: Override (stepped) or butt-edge type, as standard with manufacturer.
- Cap Material and Finish: Steel sheet baked polyester painted to match color of panels supported.
- Basis-of-Design Product:
- Armstrong World Industries, Inc.: Prelude XL 15/16-inch Exposed Tee System.
2.6 METAL EDGE MOLDINGS AND TRIM
- Roll-Formed, Sheet-Metal Edge Moldings and Trim: Type and profile indicated or, if not indicated, manufacturer's standard moldings for edges and penetrations that comply with seismic design requirements; formed from sheet metal of same material, finish, and color as that used for exposed flanges of suspension-system runners.
- Provide manufacturer's standard edge moldings that fit acoustical panel edge details and suspension systems indicated and that match width and configuration of exposed runners unless otherwise indicated.
- For lay-in panels with reveal edge details, provide stepped edge molding that forms reveal of same depth and width as that formed between edge of panel and flange at exposed suspension member.
- For circular penetrations of ceiling, provide edge moldings fabricated to diameter required to fit penetration exactly.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
