Dr. Tim Murphy is an Associate Professor in the Environmental Safety and Occupational Health Management Programs, and College of Science Faculty Chair for 2009, at The University of Findlay. He has more than 30 years of experience in environmental and safety management and has managed environmental and emergency projects for governmental agencies and private-sector clients.

From 1981 to 1997, Dr. Murphy was employed in the public health, environmental emergency response, and environmental remediation fields. Throughout this time, valuable knowledge was gained in working with the public and government agencies during times of environmental emergencies. Following graduation from Ferris State University, he was employed as a public health sanitarian on a Native American Indian Reservation, where he gained valuable skill in working with multiple agencies for a common goal. The following 14 years were spent in the environmental remediation and emergency response fields, employed as a program manager, project manager, site supervisor, Health and Safety officer, and technical foreman.

Dr. Murphy has a detailed working knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. He is experienced in project start-up and management, emergency response including regulatory compliance, incident command, initial response, chemistry of hazardous materials, and hazardous materials incident analysis, and he has managed a number of Superfund cleanups. Dr. Murphy’s primary interests include public health leadership and workforce development issues; emergency preparedness and emergency response to all types of hazards; solid and hazardous waste management; in-situ bioremediation; risk assessment and risk management; and emergency response and environmental remediation project management. In addition, Dr. Murphy is continuing his research in the area of landfill solute transport and the most effective way to wet waste in a bioreactor landfill.

Dr. Murphy is a past recipient of the Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute Fellowship and is performing research in the areas of credentialing of environmental public health officers and the educational competencies of the credentialed professional.

The University of Findlay offers both master’s and bachelor’s degrees in environmental, safety and occupational health. Both degrees have emphasis or tracks that focus the students’ studies on emergency management. In addition, courses for the undergraduate program include OSHA 40 Hour, Emergency Standards and Practices, Emergency Management Law, Threat and Vulnerability, All Hazards Emergency Planning, OSHA Emergency Response Technician, Project Management, and Emergency Finance.
