Inclusive Physical Education

  • Regular Education Students (RES) can apply to be a part of our Inclusive Physical Education Class where a certified physical education teacher supervises them while participating with Special Needs students (SNS). The Special Needs instructor determines along with the physical education teacher which students are permitted in the class.
  • RES are graded on participation and given a self evaluation for Mid-Term and Final Exams. Each student begins with a score of 100 in the class and is deducted 5 points for each day of non-participation.
  • RES must attend TWO out of the THREE State Special Olympic Games (Fall, Winter, or Summer games) in order to receive full credit for the Unified class.
  • SNS will letter in each sport that they compete in at the State Special Olympic Games.
  • RES must also compete in at least two sports at the State Special Olympic games in order to receive a Varsity letter in Unified Special Olympics.
  • Students are to participate fully in warm-up, activities, and all other aspects that go along with the physical education class.
  • Team games are played with modified rules to include both RES and SNS.
  • RES are expected to compete and teach the game to the athletes during each game or activity.
  • RES are given opportunities to socialize and participate in one on one or small group activities or games at least once a week with the SNS. RES must not out number the athletes in any individual or dual activity on these days.
  • RES are encouraged to interact with as many SNS as possible both in and out of the physical education classroom.
  • The RES and SNS are expected to participate together in field trips that include but are not limited to SNS projects such as Project Greenhound, class outings which include bowling, the aquarium, and other educational experiences, and the Georgia State Special Olympics Unified Games. Failure to participate in field trips can result in suspension or expulsion from the class and program.
