DearBrooklyn CenterHigh School Staff,
Many of you may be aware of the Annex Teen Clinic Community Collaborative: Brooklyn Center. In response to the high rates of unintended teen pregnancies in Brooklyn Center, the Annex Teen Clinic was awarded a HennepinCounty contract for the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Pilot Project (TP3).
The Annex Teen Clinic staff and I will work with youth, families, and the broader Brooklyn Center community to provide sexuality education, parent programming, access to family planning services, and youth development programming.
This is an enormously exciting and crucial opportunity to work together to better serve the Brooklyn CenterHigh School community. This collaboration integrates best practices and the experience of the Annex Teen Clinic and Brooklyn CenterHigh School along with the community’s input into a comprehensive program.
TP3 Goals:
• Teens receive responsible sex education.
• Teens that need family planning services can find them.
• Teens can take part in quality youth development programs.
• Teens at high risk for pregnancy are referred to programs and services.
Below I have outlined how the Health Education curriculum that is used by the Annex Teen Clinicwill support the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile.
Inquirers:Student are charged to inquire about their sexual health, and given additional skills to research
Knowledgeable: One goal of TP3 is to provide teens with responsible sex education.
Thinkers: Through various activities students explore creative ways to deal with pressures.
Communicators: Assertive communication skills are introduced and practiced.
Principled: Goal setting and value exploration are key components of sexual health education.
Open-Minded: Students are asked to explore their personal perspectives and values while engaging in a dialogue about adolescent sexual health that acknowledges the values of others.
Caring:Addressing awareness of self and others in the context of a global community that empathies, expresses compassion and models respect is part of nurturing sexually healthy adolescents.
Risk-takers: We understand that risk-taking is part of adolescent development. The Teen Outreach Program (TOP) providesrisk-taking opportunities through leadership development and service learning activities.
Balanced: Comprehensive Sexuality Education by definition is balanced. According to Advocates for Youth, Comprehensive Sexuality Education “teaches about abstinence as the best method for avoiding STDs and unintended pregnancy, but also teachesabout condoms and contraception to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy and of infection with STDs, including HIV. It also teaches interpersonal and communication skills and helps young people explore their own values, goals, and options.”
Reflective: The “What, So what, Now what”reflection process is used through out the Teen Outreach Program (TOP).
If you have questions, or would like to meet discuss this further, please contact Haley Morgan at 763-561-2120 ext. 2106. Also view for more information. I look forward to working with you as we "develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect."
