Powder Coat Finish on Basement Doors Reduces

Spring Clean-Up Maintenance

NEW HAVEN, CT/March 20, 2012— With the spring months upon us, many homeowners are taking advantage of warm temperatures and starting their annual outdoor spring clean-up. For many, this includes repainting or even replacing an old rusted, leaky or rotted basement door. The Bilco Company is now offering an optional factory-applied powder coat finish on its Classic Series steel basement doors, a feature that will reduce future maintenance and drastically improve the durability and appearance of any basement door.

Manufacturers have traditionally sold basement doors with a primer finish that requires a finish coat of paint after installation. To finish a conventional metal basement door, it is recommended that a homeowner apply two coats of paint to both sides of the door on all prime painted surfaces. If the homeowner is repainting an existing door, he or she will first need to complete the following:

  • Wash doors with bleach to kill mold and mildew
  • Scrape off loose paint, rust and debris
  • Sand doors and remove sanding dust with paint thinner
  • Pretreat any remaining rust with a rust stabilizer
  • Apply a coat of primer to all repaired areas
  • Finish coat both sides of the door as described above

In addition to the time it takes to prepare and paint the door, a number of supplies are required, which can become quite expensive for the homeowner.Because most basement doors are installed in the Northeast and Midwest where there are extreme weather conditions, this process becomes an annual routine for most homeowners. Since Bilco’s powder coat finish is applied in-house, there’s no need for homeowners to incur the time and expense to finish their door upon installation, and they are relieved of this maintenance liability.

“The springtime is one of the busiest timesforreplacing basement doors,” said Jim Edgeworth, Sales & Marketing Manager for The Bilco Company.“We believe that a pre-finished door will be a great convenience to our customers. The superior quality of this finish will extend the basement door life and significantly reduce future maintenance.”

Powder coating makes metal products durable, attractive, extremely scratch-resistant and is ideal for exterior applications. In addition to being a money-saving alternative, it has several other advantages over conventional liquid coatings. Powder coating:

  • Has superior durability and corrosion protection and is highly resistant to scratching, peeling and cracking.
  • Has a longer life expectancy than conventional liquid paint.
  • Produces much thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings. It does not produce drips or runs, and the process does not require drying or flash-off time.
  • Emits zero or near zero volatile organic compounds during the manufacturing process, making it environmentally friendly and virtually pollution-free.

Bilco’s powder coat finishis available on the company’s most popular models, Classic Series Size B and C and in four neutral colors, white, sandstone, light gray and brick, to compliment the exterior of any home.
