As you may be aware, the new South Glasgow University Hospital and new Royal Hospital for Sick Children are due to open on the current Southern site early in 2015.

With this in mind, please note that positions based within the Victoria Infirmary, Mansionhouse Unit, the Western Infirmary and the current RoyalHospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill will change location and move to the new hospitals.

Gartnavel GeneralHospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary will also have some services affected by moves to the new Hospitals.

Applications are invited for a Consultant post in General Surgery with an interest in Upper GI/Laparoscopic Surgery based at NewSouthGlasgowUniversityHospital with some sessions in the NewVictoriaAmbulatoryCareHospital

This post will provide General Surgical Services to the NewSouthGlasgowUniversityHospital. The new appointment will join a team of Consultants dedicated to managing Acute Surgical Emergencies and will provide elective General Surgery services. In addition the appointment will take a role in the progression of Upper GI and Laparoscopic services in the future. Laparoscopic Benign Upper GI care is well established on the Southern General site and the appointee will be expected to possess the necessary laparoscopic skills to work closely with colleagues, participate in and develop the work of the unit. He/She will be competent in Upper GI Endoscopy.

In addition to providing clinical services the successful candidate will be required to participate in the training and assessment of junior staff and to undertake the administrative duties required in a consultant job. All consultants are required to have an annual appraisal.

Surgical trainees, at all levels, rotate from the West of Scotland Deanery and are based at the Glasgow sites. Teaching of Undergraduate medical students, trainee surgeons and visiting surgeons from overseas is considered an integral part of the work of the Directorate. It is anticipated that the appointee would contribute to the education of Surgeons in training.

Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council and a licence to practise.Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT in General Surgery or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of Interview.

1.Introduction

  • Acute Services Division

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the Largest NHS Employer in the UK and in partnership with 8 local authorities, is responsible for the health needs of a population of 1.2 million, almost a quarter of the entire Scottish population. The Acute Services Division is split into nine Directorates across 18 sites with a workforce of 27,500 and an annual budget of £1.2 billion. The geographical area covered is diverse; it covers the major city of Glasgow, large and small towns, villages and some rural areas. We have significant challenges ahead as we deliver the objectives set out in Better Health Better Care and we seek to ensure that we have the right people for the right posts.

The Acute Services Division is the largest group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland. This allows individuals a wide range of opportunities for professional development whether in community-based care or general and specialty hospital services.

The investment in Acute Hospital Services in Glasgow in the last ten years has been considerable with two new Ambulatory Care Hospitals opened in 2009. Redevelopment of acute hospital estates has taken place to facilitate the centralisation of key specialties and integration of hospital sites in recent years. The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Care Centre is a good example of the high standard of hospital development since transferring from the Western Infirmary to Gartnavel General in 2008.

New SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital

Work is nearing completion for the new hospital developments on the site of the Southern General. The £850 million development creating new adult and children’s hospitals will bring Maternity, Children’s and Adult acute services together in one of the most advanced clinical provisions in Europe with the biggest Critical Care complex and Emergency Departments in Scotland. The SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital will be handed over at the end of January 2015 with clinical services migrating from the end of April.

This will result in a major reconfiguration of services across GG & C and consultants are actively involved in the planning for this exciting development. This is a time of transformational change across Glasgow and Clyde with the SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital designated to become a trauma centre from 2016.

A new state of the art Teaching and Learning Facility is being built on the site. This is a joint venture between NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and the University of Glasgow. It will be co-located with the SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital providing benefits for staff and students and ultimately enhancing services for patients. The facility will consolidate a series of fragmented training locations throughout Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The new building will also house the Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre which will provide unique services to enable world leading developments in Stratified Medicine in chronic diseases.

A substantial volume of complex surgical work is performed in the Glasgowhospital units that provide a range of tertiary and national services. We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s 3 universities and make a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Research also has a high profile within the organisation. We provide excellent facilities for students and their tutors in the £15 million, state of the art, WolfsonMedicalSchool based at GlasgowUniversity adjacent to the Western Infirmary site.

2.The Work of the Department and scope of the job

The New SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital:

The NewSouthGlasgowUniversityHospital is a major new Teaching Hospital in Glasgow resulting from the amalgamation of the City’s Western Infirmary, Victoria Infirmary and Southern General Hospital. This integrated acute adult hospital is built over 14 floors and provides 1109 beds.Every patient in the general wards will have their own single room with an en-suite and views out across the campus, for some this will be to the hills beyond the city; no bedroom will overlook another. The standard of internal finish is attracting admiration from all visitors.

The Hospital will be supported by state of the art Critical Care facilities and Accident and Emergency Department with plans being progressed for the development of Trauma Services from 2016.

Other services include a range of high quality health care services including Accident and Emergency, General Medicine (including sub-specialties), General Surgery (including sub-specialties), Medicine for the Elderly (including Assessment, Rehabilitation, and Day Services), and Orthopaedics. Surgical services will incorporate all aspects of General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Urology, ENT, Orthopaedics and Transplantation Surgery

The above services are supported by other consultant-based services which incorporate diagnostic and clinical components including Anaesthetics, Laboratory Medicine, and Radiology. There is also available a wide range of therapeutic services which include Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy.

The Maxillofacial Department for the whole city was centralised at the hospital site in the autumn of 2002 providing trauma and elective surgery and specialist provision for head and neck cancer. The Assessment and Rehabilitation service for the Physically Disabled is also provided for the whole city from the Southern General Hospital.

There is also a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services including Audiology, Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, ECG, Physiotherapy, Radiology (including MRI and CT provision for the general hospital service) and Speech Therapy.

The New VictoriaHospital

This is one of the most modern and well equipped hospitals in Scotland. It provides an attractive and welcoming environment for patients and visitors with light, airy public spaces, comfortable waiting areas and modern consulting rooms. Approximately 400,000 patients attend the hospital every year.

In addition to outpatient clinics, day surgery and diagnostic services, the hospital provides a number of specialist services such as cardiology and gynaecology.

There is also a Minor Injuries Unit with its own dedicated entrance for rapid access to a highly skilled clinical team. The unit is open seven days a week 9am – 9pm.

Department Information and scope of post

This post will have sessions within the NewSouthUniversityHospital and the NewVictoriaHospital.

The opening of the NewSouthUniversityHospital has resulted in the development of a new Surgical Department comprising 26 Consultants with Specialist Interests in Emergency Surgery, Colorectal, Upper GI, Breast and Endocrine. Those major sub specialities employ a team approach with close links to the regional Managed Clinical Networks.

The development of NewSouthGlasgowUniversityHospital has given the opportunity to reconfigure and prioritise Acute Emergency Surgical Care.

This post seeks applications from suitably trained individuals who are able to provide an elective and emergency surgical service at consultant level.

This post will provide General Surgical Services to the NewSouthGlasgowUniversityHospital. The new appointment will join a team of Consultants dedicated to managing Acute Surgical Emergencies and will provide elective General Surgery services. This will include but not be exclusive to the maintenance of appropriate patient records, keeping and participating in personal and unit audit and the retention of documentation for appraisal. All consultants are required to have an annual appraisal.

Emergency Surgery for the post is based at the NewSouthGlasgowUniversityHospital with clinics and elective surgery split betweenthere and the NewVictoriaHospital. Fully staffed Intensive Care and High dependency beds will be well utilised. Clinical Nurse Specialists are valued members of the teams.

Applicants should have a broad surgical training and should have full GMC registration and eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register. UK trainees will have evidence of Higher Specialist Training leading to CCT, or be six months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

Specialist nurses provide a commitment to Colorectal, Upper GI and Breast Surgery sub-specialties. Nurse Endoscopists are also in post on each of the sites.

4.Duties of the Post

  • Clinical Commitments

The post holder will be based at the Southern General Hospitalin the first instance and transfer to join the team of the amalgamated clinical group. The post holder will contribute to the on call receiving on this site. The on-call commitment is currently 1:6 however this arrangement will change with the move to the new hospital following amalgamation of teams. It should be noted that the post holder’s job plan may be subject to alteration in conjunction with other consultant colleagues as clinical services are reviewed in line with the Acute Services Reviews and clinical redesign. This would be by agreement and fully discussed through the clinical leads.

The Job Plan outlined below will include clinical commitments on both the Victoria and Southern General sites and is indicative of the duties of the post. The exact detail of the duties of the post and the timetable will be discussed with the successful candidate and agreed in line with the needs of the service.

It is envisaged that the successful candidate will provide a range of sessions across the two hospitals. The post holder will be asked to be responsive to and commit to supporting the management of the wider colorectal patient group as a member of the consultant team.

5.Arrangements to Visit the Division

Short-listed candidates are invited automatically by the Director of Human Resources to visit the hospitals concerned.
