Section 2.1 (106)

Objectives Use fractions as part of a whole, draw a sketch illustrating a fraction, use fractions in a real-world environment

2.1.1 Using a Fraction to Represent Part of a Whole

A fraction is written in the form x/y where x is the numerator, y is the denominator

Pictorial: This stick is broken into 5 equal pieces. Each part is 1/5 of the total

||||||

The filled in section is 3 pieces or 3/5 of a stick.

TE1 Use a fraction to represent the shaded part of the whole

a) OXX 2/3 b) XXXXXOOO 5/8 c) XO ½

PP1 (107) Use a fraction to represent the shaded part of the whole______1

a) X O X Xb)X Oc) ______2/3

O O O OO X______1/3

O X O O4/12X O 3/6______0 2/3

You can look at fractions like they were a quotient of the numberator divided by the numerator. There is one thing youcan’t do with fractions, the denominator can NEVER be zero.

2.1.2 Drawing a Sketch to Illustrate a Fraction (essentially the opposite of the previous)

TE2 Draw a sketch a) 3/5 of an object XXOOb) 7/8 of an object XXXXXXXO

PP2 (108) Draw a sketch a) 4/5 of an object XXXXO b) 3/7 of a group XXXOOOO

Remember: (n≠0) n/0 is undefined 0/0 is indefinite. 0/n is zero -- ANY number divided by 1 is itself (108)

2.1.3 Using Fractions to Represent Real Life Situations (109)

TE3 Use a fraction to describe each situation

a) A basketball player made seven out of twelve free throws in the game 7/12

b) At the dealership, 22 of the sales are used, 25 of them are new. Desscribe the part of cars for sale that are new 25/(22+25) 25/47

c) The pattern called for one-eighth of a yard of fabric. 1/8

PP3 (109) Use a fraction to describe each situation

a) 9 out of 17 players on the basketball team are on the dean’s list 9/17

b) The senior class has 382 men and 351 women. Describe the part of the class are men. 382/(382+351) 382/733

c) John needed seven-eights of a yard of material 7/8

TE4. 13 out of 30 students in a biology class are full-time students. 15 out of 23 students in a math class are full-time. Write a fraction that describes both classes together the number of all full-time students and the total number of students (assume not student is in both class) (13+15)/(30+23) 28/53

PP4 (109) An inspector found that one out of seven belts were defective. She also found that two out of nine shirts weredefective. Write a fraction that describes what part of all the objects examined were defective (1+2)/(7+9) 3/16

Developing Your Study Skills

Previewing the Material. Part of your preparations each day is to peruse the sections to be covered in the next class. Itwill assist you to understand what the instructor will cover next.
