Course Overview:

The purpose of this course is to provide students with a learning experience equivalent to that of a third-year college course in Peninsular and Latin American literature. The course is designed to introduce students to the formal study of a representative body of Peninsular and Latin American literary texts. As this course is conducted completely in Spanish, enrolling students are expected to have practiced both formal and informal active use and application of the target language consistently throughout their previous four years of study. All works are presented and read in Spanish in their entirety. Students in this course will continue to develop their proficiency in the target language through extensive work that interweaves the advanced skills needed for active communication, comprehension and synthesis of multiple sources of written materials as well as selected review of vocabulary and grammar structures through informal and formal composition assignments. Students will take part in individual as well as partner and group work in the classroom and the Stevens Language Lab to further develop analysis proficiency. Students will also broaden their understanding of the variety of Hispanic cultures found in the world through the study of history, art, literature, music, and current events. A multitude of resources are available and in use throughout the year in order to facilitate the learning process.

Honor Code: In addition to the Lake Mary High School Honor Code, the following rules will apply to Spanish class:

1.No dictionaries during quizzes or exams unless specified by the teacher.

2.No use of Internet translation sites is permitted when preparing short essays, conversations or compositions. Do your own work!

General Advice: This class is given in SPANISH and you are expected to participate in all activities using the Spanish language. Use the following resources during your Summer Vacation to practice your Spanish skills.

Ø  Spanish TV channels (Univision, Telemundo) – Try watching any of the game shows or telenovelas. Include closed captioning in Spanish.

Ø  Magazines, newspapers – Pick up a copy of “La Prensa”, Go on-line and connect to “El Sentinel” – this is the Spanish version of the Orlando Sentinel.

Ø  DVDS – Set the DVD language to Spanish or run the Spanish subtitles

Ø  Books – Meet a friend at Barnes and Nobles or Borders, grab a cappuccino and browse through the books available (you could even check out the children’s section)

Ø  And the best advice; talk to Spanish speaking people. DO NOT BE AFRAID!
