Radnor Township School District
SCORE REPORT
DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills)
First Sound Fluency
The Radnor Township School District assesses primary grade students’ progress in phonemic awareness and phonics through the DIBELS subtests each year. The purpose of this assessment is to isolate phonemic awareness and phonics skills to determine whether additional support is needed for students. At the Kindergarten level, Radnor Township School District administers one of the DIBELS subtests, First Sound Fluency, in the fall. This assessment is individually administered by the building literacy team and is a one minute timed assessment that is nationally normed.
During the First Sound Fluency (FSF) subtest, students are orally given a word and then asked to say the first sound in the word. First Sound Fluency scores are reported as the number of correct sounds (phonemes) produced in one minute. Based on these scores, students are grouped into three categories of support. Students scoring At or Above the Benchmark are identified as Core Support, which indicates that no additional support in these areas beyond the classroom is needed at this time. Students scoring Below the Benchmark are identified as Strategic Support, which indicates that a moderate level of additional support would be beneficial. Students scoring Well Below the Benchmark are identified as Intensive Support, which indicates a need for additional intervention.
Below are the fall benchmark levels for Kindergarten:
First Sound Fluency (FSF)Score Level / Phonemes in one minute
At or Above Benchmark / 10 to 60
Below Benchmark / 5 to 9
Well Below Benchmark / 0 to 4
