Crosswalk Framework

1. What is a Crosswalk?

A crosswalk is a matrix that lays out the connection between the Units Conceptual Frame work and standards used by State and National organization and bodies. (Example below)

K.1. Candidates will exhibit adequate knowledge of subject specific content in core curriculum. / 1. Content Pedagogy: The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students. / 1. Understanding of the content, knowledge, skills, and processes for teaching the Virginia Standards of Learning for English including: oral language (speaking and listening), reading, writing, and literature, and how these standards provide the core for teaching English in grades prek-6 (elementary licensure).
History and social sciences (1) Understanding of the knowledge, skills, and processes of history and the social sciences disciplines as defined in the Virginia Standards of Learning and how the standards provide the necessary foundation for teaching history
and social sciences. / Standard 1: Development and Learning Candidates know and understand the major concepts, principles, theories, and research related to development of children and young adolescents. Candidates use knowledge and understanding to construct learning opportunities that support individual student’s development, acquisition of knowledge, and motivation.

2.  How does a crosswalk help me in my course?

The crosswalk will assist you in making the connection between what you cover in your course; to the conceptual framework; to the State and/or National standards.

3.  What items from the crosswalk should appear in my syllabus?

You should include the items from the Conceptual Framework Candidate Proficiencies that you assess in your course. One course cannot cover all Program Outcomes,

4.  Should my test and exams be aligned to the standards?

All assessments (test, exams, projects and presentations), must be aligned with Conceptual Framework standards. The Crosswalk helps show the relationship between the State and National standards and will assist you in collecting data on how pre-candidates/candidates are meeting the standards. The Candidates Proficiencies listed in your syllabus will appear in a rubric you create for grading assignments. The rubric will then be loaded into TK20 to score your assignments.
