Hayes’ Newsletter Week of March 5, 2018

Good Afternoon, Parents,

I hope you are having a wonderful week. We have had a very productive academic week and I am proud of the kids work! I hope you have a great weekend planned. We are celebrating the upcoming birth of my grandson with a baby shower!

** Student Recognition: Way to go, Justin Osorio and Carson Wohlgamuth! Justin is our February Citizen and Carson is our March Terrific Kid.

** Mid-terms: Midterms came home this week on Tuesday afternoon. If you have not signed and returned them, please do so ASAP. I am also missing quite a few black folders. If you have not signed them this past week, ask your child for it. The web address to check your child's grades is

** Tonight is We Love Our School. I hate I will miss this tonight, but I hope many of you can attend.I have been every year and was looking forward to it, but Montana begins her first basketball lesson tonight at the same time.

** Important Dates:

  • March 7: Quarter 3 Reading Assessment
  • March 15: Fraction Test; STEM Night

** CURRICULUM:

A) LITERACY:

  • Read Alouds: This week, we will continue Wildfires and work some more with The Paper Bag Princess.
  • Novel: We will finish A Wrinkle in Time this week. We will begin our next novel,Freak the Mighty, the following week. Wednesday and Thursday nights' reading will be a Scholastic News and the test.
  • Literacy Instruction: Students are working in pairs to complete a practice passage. I will model a passage called The Flax. We will continue to work with our Buckledown books. Our Quarter 3 Reading Assessment will be on Wednesday. Students will take this on the computer.
  • Reader's Workshop: We will begin our Fantasy Unit this week. We will discuss the setting and how it can be like a character in the book. We will talk about how many characters change from a realistic to a fantastical setting. Students will be reading a Just Right book with their partner.
  • Writing: We will continue to work on opinion writing with evidence. Students will be working on filling out a graphic organizer this week.
  • Vocabulary: We will begin Wordly Wise #6 this week.

B) MATH: This week, we will divide fractions. We will only divide whole numbers and unit fractions. We will also look at finding area using fractions. We should be ready to test by March 15. Also over the next week, we will review quadrilaterals.

C) SS: This week, we will begin discussing our role in government. We will discuss our democratic responsibilities and rights. We will talk about voting, taxes, jury duty, citizenship, political parties, etc.

D) SCIENCE: This week will study the skeletal and muscular systems. I will quiz those two systems together. Students should be studying nightly.
