1) The mathematical activities that take place in a classroom according to NCTM standards are problem solving and group discussion. Students are allowed to use manipulative to understand better the concept that is being taught. Teachers use some tolls such as scissors, compass, rulers anything that would make the student understand the concept. In this classroom the use of technology and computer is acceptable, so the student can explore and expand their knowledge. Students are allowed to participated, is more of a student center classroom. Students have the opportunity of discussing and explaining what they have learned and how they get an answer to a certain problem.
2) The kind of mathematical activities that take place in a classroom according to W.G. Quirk’s are memorizing the basic math skills. They use the “learn by example” technique this consist of the teacher giving a certain amount of example to learn the same concept just with different numbers. The use of repetition and complimented with memorizing is acceptable. Teachers and students are given a specific curriculum and are expected to follow the material precisely before going to the next grade.
3) I would have benefit from the NCTM because these classrooms focused on student center classes, students are given the opportunity of participating in the class, and give their opinion and understanding of the problem that is given. I would have benefit from W.G. Quirk because of the class room structured students are given the opportunity of discussing the problem. With a combination of both would have being perfect.
4) A) Some of the advantages of being in an NCTM classroom are having group discussions, letting the student be an important part of the class. Also the use of technology and computers gives the students the opportunity of expanding their knowledge and to explore new techniques.
B) Some of the advantages described by W.G. Quirk are the method of being sure
Each student learns what they need to in order to go to the next grade. This is very important because students should not be able to past to another grade out knowing the material that was cover in a certain grade. Because if a student goes to another grade with out knowing the material the student won’t be able to understand the new material, this would hold the student back.
