September 5 - 8, 2017
I hope you all have a wonderful, restful long weekend!!
I know it's not quite "fall" yet, but wishful thinking!!
This site will be updated weekly. You can also join Remind 101. The Remind 101 will be texted out when there is achange of schedule or an important event coming up. I will not send out daily homework reminders. Homework for each class will be written on the board. All students need to write this down each day.
Reading - This week, we will continue in our readers. We will be readingEliza's Diary. Our focus skill will be theme - reading to discover the theme in a story or passage. We will have a reading comprehension test on Friday, September 8, 2017 for a G2 grade. This test will NOT include discussion questions, but will include questions about theme.
Your child will be given a new vocabulary workshop story with definitions, synonyms and antonyms on Tuesday, September 5th. We will review the vocabulary including definitions, synonyms and antonyms every day. This week, we will havea synonym/antonym activity on Thursday, September 7th, for a g1 grade. Next week, we will have a complete the sentence activity on Tuesday, September 12thfor a g1 grade and on Friday, September 15th, we will have a G2 test on these words.
We will be using Moby Max again this year. We will work on all three reading areas - reading informational, reading stories, and reading skills. We will also work on the languageportion of Moby Max. Your child can practice all skills at home on this site.
I check fluency once a week. This week's fluency grades were much improved, BUT the students read a fiction passage. The next three fluency passages will be nonfiction. I have many nonfiction books for your child to borrow in my library. Please encourage the reading of nonfiction.
STAR test/AR - When you receive your child's AR note, please look to see what reading level he/she is. He/she should be on at LEAST a 5.0 reading level - since this is the beginning of fifth grade. I'm seeing a good many children at level 3 and 4. If this is your child, please have him/her read more at home. The devices need to be put away and books need to be in hands to increase reading levels. This is a life skill and really needs to be pushed.
English -This week, we will continue in chapter 3. This chapter will focus on prepositions and prepositional phrases. The children should be working on revising their paper. The revised paper is due to me on Tuesday, August 29th. I will help them go through and make final corrections (spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc.) The final paper will be due Thursday, September 7th, for a G2 grade.
Spelling - Our spelling words for this week are: ounce, sprawl, launch, loyal, avoid, basketball, moist, haunt, scowl, naughty, destroy, saucer, pounce, poison, August, auction, royal, coward, awkward, encounter, poise, loiter, exhaust, assault, and alternate.
The spelling assignments for the week are:Tuesday - 3 x each, Wednesday - spelling worksheet, Thursday - spelling 10 sentences. On Friday, September 8th, we will have our regular spelling test. Because of the short week, we will NOT have a dictation test this week.
If you were unable to attend the Booster Club/Open House meeting, there were opportunities to sign-up for work days at Hayes Cooper. We are planning a big work day on September 23rd and could use the help. Please contact the school if you can come and help. Everyone is needed and appreciated even if you can only give an hour of your time!
Have a wonderful week!!
