Favorite Poem Project Assignment, Checklist, & Grading Criteria
ASSIGNMENT:
Our final poetry project will be based on a poem you choose as your favorite poem. You will analyze the poem for the poetic devices it contains, explain why you chose it, and, finally, memorize your poem and present it to the class. Below, each part of the project is explained in more detail, and the grading criteria is attached. You will be assigned a partner (you have the option to work alone).
Choosing a poem: You will be reading a plethora of poetry during class, but you are not limited to those poems to find your favorite poem. If you would like to look elsewhere, you are welcome to do so. As discussed in class, a person who chooses a poem with 10 lines will not receive the same grade as a person whose poem is 20 lines. The grading for the number of lines is as follows:
A = 20 lines (or more)
B = 15-19 lines
C = 10-14 lines
If you need help to find a length that is right for you, please ask.
Analysis: You will have to analyze your poem for at least five of the poetic devices discussed in class and you will explain each device and cite the examples of those devices from the poem. Then, you will explain how each device adds to or affects the poem. This is something we will be discussing and practicing further in class.
Connection: Using a free-write method, you will explain your connection to the poem you chose. There are many reasons people enjoy a poem; this will give you a chance to explain yours. The free-write will get your thoughts and reactions down on paper; you will then write a final draft of the paragraph. Both the free-write and final paragraph will be turned in with the project. This is also something we will be discussing further in class.
Presenting: Each student will present the poem to the class (PPT). While preparing presentations, remember the confidence stance, filling the space, facing your audience, projecting your voice, and tone of voice.
The checklist on the next page will help you to organize all the parts of your project. Also, review the grading criteria for the written analysis and connection, as well as the presentation.
