Phoenix Retreat

Soul retrieval and developing compassion for self, others and life

14–20 May 2018

with Susannah Darling Khan

The 6-day Phoenix Retreat is designed to catalyse you into a new level of awareness, enabling you to assume responsibility for and commitment to living your life in alignment with your deepest purpose. It is also a gateway for those who wish to take part in our Apprenticeship Programme.

As we develop, life provides us with the perfect challenges through which we can evolve. On the Phoenix Retreat, we work with what we call the ‘creation story’ you have inherited and lived from, whose characters we call ‘understudies’. In the theatre, an understudy is a person who learns another’s role in order to be able to act as a replacement. On the stage of life, these understudies often take to performing nearly all the time, while the real stars wait hidden in the wings. They shouldn’t be blamed for this; they came into being with the intention of protecting your essence. However, without your attention, they will continue their performances for your entire lifetime, even if it no longer serves your deeper interests.

During the retreat, the practice of Movement Medicine helps in developing the self-acceptance and clear intention necessary to create the conditions in which the understudies can become visible. Once they are illuminated, you can compassionately and with gratitude, invite each one to step aside and make way for your essential self. What is revealed through this process, and how you integrate and embody that, is the work of the Phoenix Retreat.

PREREQUISITES: To participate in the Phoenix Retreat, you need to have completed 25 hours of Movement Medicine or other related practice (5Rhythms, Open Floor, Soul Motion, etc). You also need to have the inner and outer resources and support that mean you can engage with this intense personal work in a responsible way. If you are unsure whether you meet the prerequisites, please enquire.

Susannah is one of the directors of The School of Movement Medicine. She has been teaching internationally since 1989. Her background is in anthropology (1st Class Hons UCL 1986) and Gestalt Psycho-therapy (Graduate of the Gestalt Centre London 1988). Her teaching is full with energy, clarity, sensitivity and her infectious love of the dance itself.

If you are coming by train and planning to get a taxi at Totnes station it will save you money to share the taxi with other participants.

By train and taxi

Totnes is the nearest station. It is on the mainline from London Paddington to Plymouth. From Totnes station we suggest sharing taxis. The journey takes about 20 minutes. There are always taxis at the rank.

For more information and train times, call +44 8457 484950 (24-hour telephone line), or visit: www.nationalrail.co.uk or http://www.thetrainline.com/

For train services to UK from Paris/Brussels, visit: www.eurostar.com

Please note: It is much cheaper to buy train tickets in advance. We advise you to buy your tickets at the earliest opportunity.

By air

The nearest international airport is Bristol Airport. From Bristol Airport there is a shuttle bus to Bristol Temple Meads Railway Station. From there you can get a train to Totnes, which takes around 1¾ hours. For taxis from Totnes, see the section on travelling to Rill by train and taxi.

There is information about Bristol Airport at:www.bristolairport.co.uk.

Heathrow is probably the most convenient London airport.

By bus (and other cheaper options)

You may find it cheaper to travel by bus and it is possible to get some buses to Totnes (or Newton Abbot or perhaps even Exeter). There are also some cheaper trains which run from London (Waterloo station) to Exeter. However, you will need to investigate these yourself. This site may help: http://uk.megabus.com/. For National Express coaches, please go to: http://www.nationalexpress.com/home.aspx. There are coaches from Heathrow to Totnes and these are much cheaper than travelling by train.

Also there is now a very cheap coach service SW Falcon (run by Stage Coaches) connecting Bristol airport to Plymouth. The nearest stop to Rill is Drumbridges (Marley Head could also work). You could either organise a taxi for the last bit of the journey, or there is a local bus which runs every 2 hours from both Drumbridges and Marley Head to Buckfastleigh. There is a timetable for that local bus X38 here. If you get off at Buckfastleigh Station approach it should take you around 25 minutes to walk to Rill from there. There is a map here.
