PROGRAM

Rich McElliott was with us today, talking about the Shabbona Lake Sportsman’s Club. The club is about 40 years old, and was founded to support the park. Now they’re mostly a fishing club, but still help out with cleanup and maintenance of the park. Every year a muskie survey is conducted. They collected (and then released) 56 this year. 2 to 3 is considered needed for a “good” muskie lake. They found one that was 46½“. Too small to keep. 4 years they got a record 47¾“ muskie. Still too small. The lake is a landmark muskie lake, which means a muskie must be 48” long to keep. They started a Friends of Shabbona Lake to help out the DNR with lake management. They’ve got their 401(c) status. Rich says they’ve got their ducks all in a row. I don’t know how they managed that, but I wish he’d brought a picture of it. They make donations to various local groups like Safe Passage. But with funding cutbacks to the DNR, uncertainty looms. The DNR is already understaffed. The Sportsman’s Club has a “Young Anglers Fishing League” for kids – the only such league in Illinois. Last year 55 kids participated, and they anticipate more this year. The group is really dedicated to doing whatever’s necessary to keep the lake in good shape. Why not check them out at the lake or, if the weather’s bad,at

Heard around the tables:

Apparently Al has special insight into the art of sitting in a chair…

Quotes for the day

“ There’s a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.”

-Steven Wright

“Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.”

–Henry David Thoreau

Steve Cichy wanted to know how much it cost an Illinois resident to go drown a few worms. Answer: A mere $15.

Also, if you would like to contribute to the Fairdale Tornado Relief Effort, what is really needed now are monetary contributions. Cash and/or gift cards are greatly appreciated. This will be especially true in the coming months as residents begin to rebuild. Go to villageofkirkland.com for information.

This picture was taken on 4/19/15 – 10 days after the tornado. Crews have basically been working around the clock cleaning up Fairdale and the surrounding area.
