Mark your calendars for SENIOR PARENT NIGHT scheduled for Thursday, September 10th at 7:00pm in the Diane Payne Auditorium. All senior parents and students are invited. The counselors will talk about the college application process, graduation requirements, and paying for college.

SAVE THE DATE: Plan now to attend the Homecoming Barbecue Dinner sponsored by the Junior Class Friday, October 23, at Holliday Gym, 3:30-6:30pm. Tickets $10. Forms were included in the PTSA Newsletter.

STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS [GENERAL]

Activity buses are schedule to begin next Monday, September 7th.

Teachers will be enforcing our Tardy Sweep Policy beginning today. Students who are tardy to class must report to the Tardy Sweep Table located in the front hall lobby outside the Auditorium. Warnings will be given for up to five tardies. After that, students who are tardy will be assigned to various amounts of In-School Suspensions. Students will be given Out-of-School Suspension when the 8th tardy is reached.

There will be a Baseball Interest Meeting on September 9th at 2:30pm in Room #358. All interested student athletes considering playing baseball for Broughton High School in the spring should attend. At the meeting, general baseball team information will be introduced and information will be provided on the fall practice/conditioning calendar. If you have any questions, please contact Coach Jones, Coach Newton, or Coach Morton. This meeting is just informational, no baseball gear or equipment is needed.

A word about announcements posted on the DAB: All announcements will be posted twice [one A-Day and one B-Day] on the DABs distributed to CAPS Classes on Tuesdays and to First Period Classes on the other week days. After two postings, announcements will continue to appear under “RECURRING ANNOUNCEMENTS” only on the DABs posted on our webpage until the announcements are no longer relevant.

STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENTS [JUNIORS &SENIORS]

Seniors: Ask your parents to mark their calendars for Senior Parent Night scheduled for Thursday, September 10th, at 7:00PM in the Diane Payne Auditorium. All senior parents and students are invited. The counselors will talk about the college application process, graduation requirements and paying for college.

A Wake County College Fair has been scheduled for Sunday, September 20th, from 2:00-4:30PM at the NCSU McKimmon Center on Western Blvd. Over 100 colleges will attend to discuss college admission with local high school junior and seniors. Financial Aid Sessions will be held at 2:45 & 3:45, and Preparing for College Sessions at 2:30 & 3:30. Admission and parking are free. Students should bring their own bag to carry their acquired college brochures and materials in.

Minority Senior Girls: The Women of Distinction Program for high school seniors highlight the opportunities at Smith College [MA] for African American, Asian American, Latina and Native American students. Participants in this 3-day program, scheduled for the weekend of October 16th, will explore Smith College and determine whether it might be an appropriate college choice for them. Students will live in campus houses, experience the academic and social like at Smith and attend panels and workshops on student life and the college admission process. Admission to the Program is a competitive process based on academic and personal qualities. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously visited Smith Smith will provide round-trip transportation, meals and accommodations for all selected participants. Applications are available online at http://www.smith.edu/admission/wod/ and the deadline to apply is Wednesday, September 16, 2015. Please note that your high school transcript is required, so plan accordingly. All applicants will be notified in writing by September 30, and selected participants will be given instructions about arranging travel and other program details.

Sophomores: The North Carolina School of Science & Mathematics [NCSSM] is a public, residential high school for academically talented juniors and seniors. The school currently enrolls approximately 680 juniors & seniors representing all 13 congressional districts in North Carolina. NCSSM offers both a Residential Program and an Online Program and applicants may apply to either or both programs. There is no cost to apply and no tuition to become enrolled in either. The criteria used to select students for admission are as follows: (1) Interest in science, math, technology as determined by participation in clubs, competitions, supplemental programs, and other related activities; (2) Leadership positions held; (3) Above average grades in freshman & sophomore classes; (4) Teacher & guidance counselor evaluations (5) Test results from SAT [must be taken Oct., Nov., Dec., or Jan. of the sophomore year; and (6) A NCSSM math test. Applications for the Class of 2018 will be accepted from 10th grade students beginning October 15th through January 15th. St. David's School is offering anSAT Prep Course in October 2015. The course will be taught on two Saturdays in October, and the dates/times are listed below. October 24th – Verbal/Essay Section (8am - 2pm)/October 31st – Math Section (8am - 2pm). Students will receive an SAT Prep book published by the College Board as part of their enrollment. This book includes multiple practice tests with answers, which will allow each student to apply the strategies we will be discussing before sitting for the actual test. This will be our final course preparing students for the current version of the SAT with test dates on November 7th, December 5th, and
FOOTBALL TEAM NEEDS STATS KEEPERS. Support the football team bykeeping stats for the games. By working with a group to spot and record play results, it’s easy and fun. Students AND Parents are welcome; students receive service hours. Training is available onsite. The game schedule can be found on theBroughton Football website. ACE Mentor Program is a free national program that is opento any high school student who has the curiosity and drive to learn about a career in design and construction — from contracting and engineering to architecture and landscaping. As a participant,students willjoin a team of other students led by adult mentors who are practicing industry professionals. ACE isn’t about merely describing specific professions; it’s about immersingstudents in the profession by engagingstudents in actual building projects. These can range from new schools and mixed-use developments to amphitheaters and temporary housing for movie stars on location. Students will visit professional offices, job sites and other relevant locations.Students willdiscuss the same issues, and perform the same tasks, as ifthey worked in the industry. ACE givesstudents a practical hands-on view of how abstract concepts get transformed into the buildings that make up our everyday reality. If you are interested, follow the steps below:
