March: PERSEVERANCE - To not give up if something is difficult. To "hang in there" and keep trying, even if you make mistakes.

Here are some great quotes about Perseverance! Enjoy!

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” ― Confucius

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” ― Maya Angelou

“It always seems impossible until it's done.” ― Nelson Mandela

“It is not enough that we do our best; sometimes we must do what is required.” ― Winston S. Churchill

Cross Elementary is hosting Prevention Partners Screening on Wednesday, March 29, 2017. We will begin at 7:00am and three (3) participants will be screened every ten (10) minutes.

In 2017, the screening is FREE for employees, retirees and their covered spouses whose primary insurance coverage is State Health Plan (Standard or Savings Plan).

We need at least twenty (20) participants. Please sign up by Wednesday, February 22, 2017. If we cannot get 20 participants, we will invite Cross High School to join us.

If you do not have State Health Plan, you can still receive the screening at a reduced rate. There are additional tests that are available for a small fee.

Please see Dr. Felder for the forms you will need. I will post information in each work room and in your mailbox. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please see Ms. Neighbors or Dr. Felder.

Conference Share Out

2017 National Title I Conference & South Carolina Reading Conference

The 2017 National Title I Conference was held February 22-25 in Long Beach, California. Dr. Carolyn Gillens and Mrs. LaShonda Pelzer attended the conference to bring back information to share with our CES family.

·  A positive relationship between teachers and students is necessary for students to feel a connection with school and a sense of belonging.

Dr. Carolyn Gillens

·  According to Daniel Jocz, 2017 Keynote Speaker for February 22, our students say they need the following to be engaged in school:

1.  Get to know me, Listen to me, Care about me

2.  Be vulnerable with me, let me know you

3.  Have fun with me, Laugh with me

4.  Actually help me learn, teach me, hold us mutually accountable

·  As educators, we need to develop professional skills that will make students employable. Some examples of professional skills include teamwork, marketing, communication, music, public speaking, conflict resolution, time management, decision making.

·  According to Eduardo Briceno, 2017 Keynote speaker for February 24, when great sports teams play championship games they are in their Performance Zone, but during their regular practice they are in their Learning Zone. During concerts elite musicians display what they've mastered, but when they practice they focus on what they have yet to learn. In any domain, it is the time spent in the Learning Zone that leads to significant

improvement.

Mrs. LaShonda Pelzer

The 2017 South Carolina Reading Conference took place on February 23-25 in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Dr. Gloria Gilliard and Ms. Christal Stevens attended the conference to bring back information to share with our CES Family.

Every Child is a Super Reader!

We, as adults, read daily without even thinking about it. We read emails, recipes, text messages, newspapers, etc. However, for some our students this task can be daunting. Reading is a difficult task for a child that lacks the basic skills. Therefore, how do you MOVE a child that is obviously several grade levels behind? We must first begin with our mindset. Not thinking of a child as a Lexile level or reading level, but as a lifelong reader. Instilling in the child the LOVE of reading that can be felt for years to come.

Ms. Christal Stevens

·  Family-School-Community Engagement (Section 59-155-190)

Local school districts are encouraged to create family-school-community partnerships that focus on increasing the volume of reading, in school and at home, during the year and at home and in the community over the summer.

Dr. Gloria Gilliard
