World Affairs Council Introducing New Membership Levels

It is the World Affairs Council (WAC's) mission to inform and inspire the community to think and act globally which is whythey have updated their membership levels to maximize the value to all members. Please review theengagement levels listed below, select the level that best represents how you want to take advantage oftheir programs, and continue your intellectual and professional journey with the World Affairs Council!
Some key points about their membership levels:
• All of those who sign up to receive e-communications will be a Network Member

The new WAC Membership Engagement Levels are in effect now.All current members must upgrade to a new Engagement Membership Level by October 1st to take advantage of the new members’ benefits. SAVE THE DATE for the 9th District Community Forum

Join me and my staff for our annual Fall Community Forum on Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. at the Clifton Center, 2117 Payne St in the community room. Guest speakers include Major Mark Fox – LMPD and Mr. Dirk Gowin – Metro Public Works to provide updates on projects. Safe States Initiative: Pedestrian Safety Class

As part of the Safe States Initiative, the Kentucky team is planning for a workshop on Pedestrian Safety to leaders in the Louisville area

The goal of this course is to provide participants with a working knowledge of pedestrian safety principles and practices, with a focus on utilizing the Healthy Communities and Safe Communities models to guide the implementation and evaluation of pedestrian safety projects in the community.

The class will be held on September 23rd from 1-5pm in the Metro Development Center in the 1st Floor Conference Room. It is located at 444 S. 5th Street.

Hilltop Theater property soon could be home to a new restaurant

Louisville businessman Mo Deljoo has the renovation for the former Hilltop Theater building at 1757 Frankfort Ave. in Louisville's Clifton neighborhood nearly finished. He said he is in serious negotiations with one potential tenant for a restaurant. Deljoo said prospective tenants for the former Hilltop Theater have mentioned creating an entertainment venue in the roughly 5,000-square-foot space, which was built circa 1905. But Deljoo hopes to land a single-tenant restaurant with a courtyard and outdoor seating area. Click here for the full Business First article.

Jack O' Lantern Spectacular Returns to Iroquois Park Tickets Now on Sale for October Event

Local artists will carve more than 5,000 pumpkins which will light a trail the length of five football fields at the base of Iroquois Park. Back for its second year in Louisville, the Jack O' Lantern Spectacular, sponsored by Thorntons, will take place nightly from October 9 through November 2.

The trail is open from dusk to 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets range from $9 to $15, with discounts for seniors and children 12 and under. Proceeds from the event benefit the Louisville Metro Parks Foundation.

The wooded trail begins just outside of Iroquois Amphitheater (1080 Amphitheater Road, Louisville, KY 40214) and weaves its way for a third of a mile through the trees with themed vignettes set to music. The carved, lit pumpkins rotate on a weekly basis creating a different experience each weekend.The event is held rain or shine. Coach drop-off and on-site parking is available.

Vision Louisville Announces SoBro ArtWalks Contest Winners

Four artistic designs chosen as winners of the SoBro ArtWalks Contest will be painted along the SoBro 4th Street corridor this Sunday.

The designs, representing the energy and diversity of the SoBro neighborhood, will be part of a community-wide event from 2 – 7 p.m. on 4th Street between Broadway and Kentucky Street.

In addition to painting the crosswalks, Sunday’s event will feature outdoor yoga classes, walking tours of nearby community gardens, food trucks, live music, a bike raffle and many other family-friendly activities.

Volunteers are needed to paint the crosswalks and are encouraged to register with Jeff O’Brien by emailing or calling 574-1354. Fourth Street between Broadway and Kentucky Street will be closed to traffic on Sunday from 1 – 7 p.m. for the event. Parking for the free event is available on 3rd Street and 5th Street.

9th District FREE Mammogram Screenings

On Friday, October 17th, from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm the 9th District office, in partnership with U of L Hospital and the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, will offer FREE mammograms at the Clifton Center, 2117 Payne Street. To make an appointment please contact my office at 574-1109. There is no cost to eligible women without insurance. Women with insurance will need to bring their card so a claim may be filed.

Healthy Hoops Offers Education, Fun for Asthmatics

Healthy Hoops is a fun-filled event that uses basketball to help asthmatic children--ages 7 to 13--lead healthy, active lives. This year’s Healthy Hoops Tip-Off takes place September 20th, 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Moore Traditional High School. Children can take part in health screenings, contests and basketball clinics led by celebrity players and coaches. Parents can take part in workshops and health screenings as well.
