Voting – 3 Things to Make a Difference

As members of the American Legion we serve as leaders in our communities by voting and encouraging others to exercise their civic duty and right. Here are a few ideas to help your post make a difference in this year’s election:

  1. Post: Need a Ride?
  • Set up a shuttle service through your post to provide rides for those who need transportation.Notify the media to get the word out about the service, provide your post’s phone numberand be prepared to schedule rides accordingly. Remind your members to wear their American Legion capswhen performing the service to promote awareness and membership in your community.
  1. Members: Make it Personal
  • Encourage each memberof your post to phone at least 5 of their friends to ensure that they have registered to vote, are planning to vote, and can make it the polls. Expand the reach by also encouraging each friend to reach out to 5 of their friends, as well.
  1. Community: Be a Source of Information
  • Use your post’s website and social media feeds to serve as a community resource. Post important links and information about voting in your area, such as poll locations and hours.

Just a reminder, The American Legion is a nonpartisan organizationand does not show preference for or against any particular candidate or political party. For this reason, if members of your post are volunteering at a polling station, they are serving as private citizens and should not be wearing their American Legion caps. If they are driving people to the polls or working at the post, they are encouraged to wear their caps so the community will know The American Legion is involved in the voting process. However, to remain nonpartisan, Legionnaires should not wear campaign buttons or make their personal views about candidates, parties and issues known in any way while they are engaged in nonpartisan activities for their post. Campaign materials or literature should be removed from areas where nonpartisan activities are taking place.
