Course Overview: This is a challenging course designed to foster higher order thinking skills and meet the needs of all students, including the gifted and high achieving. English 102A is an integrated course of literature, grammar, and composition. The literature will consist of nonfiction, drama, and fiction. Great emphasis will be put on critical thinking and reading, understanding literary elements, language skills, oral communication, study and listening skills, and writing.

· The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff
· Supplemental nonfiction and fiction selections provided

Composition book for journal entries
Format:
Classroom activities will include lectures, discussions, note taking, oral presentations, independent and class reading assignments, projects, essays, vocabulary, quizzes, and tests.
Expectations of the student:
The student will exhibit mature behavior; listen and participate in lectures, and discussions; maintain a quiet working environment when appropriate; take complete notes; keep up with deadlines; contribute his/her share during group work; complete assignments on time; and, seek help/ask questions when necessary.
Text(s) and materials
You will always bring to class each day a #2 pencil, a blue or black ink pen, your assigned text(s), your organized notebook, a composition book for short responses and journal entries, and your “agenda.”
Evaluation
Grades will be computed on a percent basis. All percentages will be averaged at the end of the grading period and computed in accordance with the Cobb County School System.
30% = essays
30% = tests, projects
20% = quizzes
10% = homework/class work
10% = final exam
Please note that Walton policy does not allow extra credit of any kind.
Make-up Work: Make-up work is the responsibility of the student. All missed assignments must be made up within 3 days of the absence unless other arrangements are made. If work is not made up within two weeks in accordance with the Walton handbook, a zero will be earned
· No late homework will be accepted.
· Late work will be deducted 10 points for each day that it is late. After day five, the maximum earned will be 50%.
· Tests and quizzes will be made up by the next WEB day.
Classroom Policies: All work is to be turned in on time. Students are expected to follow class rules, write assignments in their agendas and complete assignments.
· Be on time to class.
· Bring materials to class each day (a pencil, a pen, literature book, vocabulary book, and notebook paper). You will not be permitted to leave to get materials from your locker.
· Respect the rights of others. Do not talk when I am talking, when others are talking, or when you have assigned work to complete in class.
Tardy Policy: Tardies will be handled as outlined in the student handbook. Please be in your seat when the tardy bell rings.
Student Needs: In order to meet the learning needs of all students the curriculum and instructional strategies for this course are differentiated in content, process and product. Not all students or classes will necessarily be doing the same thing at the same time. Assignments may vary from student to student or class to class to ensure that students have opportunities to explore, create, maximize their potential, and apply themselves.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Students are expected to do their own work. Cheating is defined as, but is not limited to, the following acts:
§ Copying anyone’s answers to questions, exercises, study guides, class work, or homework assignments.
§ Taking any information verbatim from any source, including the Internet, without giving proper credit to the author, or rearranging the words and/or changing some words as written by the author and claiming the work as his/her own. (plagiarism)
§ Looking on another student’s paper during a test or quiz.
§ Having available any study notes or other test aids during a test or quiz without the teacher’s permission.
§ Collaborating on assignments when independent work is expected
A student who is involved in cheating will receive a grade of zero on the material, an unsatisfactory in conduct, and his/her parents will be notified.
